Editors Note: The devotional has a background song by
called 'This Blood' which can be heard if you use Internet
Explorer.
SCRIPTURE:
"On the evening of that first day of the week,
when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the
Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!"
After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples
were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. Again Jesus said, "Peace be with
you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." And with that he
breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive
anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are
not forgiven." (John 20:19-23, NIV)
BACKGROUND:
Earlier in John 20, the disciples learn that Jesus came back to
life and was not in the tomb anymore. They realize He had RISEN!
OBSERVATIONS:
I asked myself what do we learn about the
disciples?
1. On the evening of Sunday night, the disciples were together.
2. On the evening of Sunday night, they had all the doors locked for
fear of the Jews.
INTERPRETATION:
I asked myself why the disciples feared the Jews?
The disciples knew that Jesus had risen as head knowledge but they had
not experienced it personally in their lives so the RESURRECTION OF
JESUS CHRIST, did not transform them yet. They had not experienced the
power of the RISEN CHRIST and were as cowardly as they were when the
soldiers came to take Jesus away for His crucifixion on Friday. But
something happened on Sunday night that began the transformation in
their lives.
OBSERVATIONS:
I asked myself what did the disciples experience on Sunday night later?
1. Amidst the locked doors, Jesus came and stood among them.
2. Jesus said, 'PEACE BE WITH YOU'
3. Jesus showed them His hands and side.
4. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.
5. Jesus again said, 'PEACE BE WITH YOU'
6. Jesus said, 'As the Father has sent me, I am sending you'
7. Jesus breathed on them and said, 'RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT'
I
decided to look at POINT 1 today:
POINT
1: 'Amidst the locked doors, Jesus came and stood among them'
INTERPRETATION:
I asked myself what is significant about 'Amidst the locked doors, Jesus
came and stood among them?'
No locked doors could keep Jesus away from His mission. Jesus had a
mission He was going to accomplish in the lives of the disciples. Jesus
wanted the disciples to see that. I believe Jesus also wanted the
disciples to see that He was not confined to matter of the walls or
doors. Jesus came to minister unto them in their fears and worries.
Jesus knew what they were going through and was not going to leave them
in that condition. This is evidenced by POINT 2 which I hope to look at
tomorrow.
IMPLICATIONS:
I saw important implications for my own life. Even when I lock myself
behind closed doors because I fear what other people would think about
me or what others will find out about me, I cannot hide from Jesus
Christ. I cannot lock Jesus away from my apartment or wherever I am at.
If Jesus chooses to intervene in my life and address the issues I am
facing, Jesus will intervene and no amount of hiding or locked doors
will stop that from happening. Jesus wanted to address the disciples
fears through the locked doors and I believe Jesus wants to do the same
in my life. Jesus wants to reach behind locked doors and deliver me. But
it is not just for me but Jesus wants to do that for you too.
I ask
you now dear friend, 'Why have you locked yourself away?'
Dear friend, many times we lock ourselves away from other people but
most of all from the Lord Jesus Christ, because we fear what other
people will think about us if they knew who we really are in our
shortcomings and difficulties but most of all we do not want the Lord to
see us in our sin and mistakes we commit. We may think "if the Lord knew
how I was, He would never accept me so I need to do this and that before
I can come to the Lord" or "I am not yet ready to be a Christian because
of all these sins I am struggling with in my life and Jesus cannot
accept me so let me overcome these and then I will come to Jesus"
DANGER, DANGER, DANGER, DESTRUCTION, DESTRUCTION!
Friend, we lock ourselves in our problems, we lock ourselves in our
sins, and we lock ourselves from others who we fear because of their
judgment upon our lives. You may have been subjected to harsh judgment
from others because of who you are or what you have done. The disciples
knew they faced harsh judgment from the Jews, so they hid in fear
specifically from those in authority. You maybe hiding from people
because you are fearful of being judged. But most importantly, you maybe
hiding from the Lord Jesus.
I
want you to know, you need not be behind locked doors anymore. Even if
you are, the Good News is that Jesus reaches out to you in your
shortcomings and sins. Jesus already knows what you have committed and
what you will commit, and yet He reaches out to you and LOVES YOU
UNCONDITIONALLY.
That
is amazing to know that Jesus loves you in your sin and not just when
you have given up your sin to follow Him. That is why Jesus said to the
Pharisees when they questioned how Jesus could eat with such
tax-collectors and scum of the earth as they thought:
"While Jesus was having dinner at Levi's house,
many tax collectors and "sinners" were eating with him and his
disciples, for there were many who followed him. When the teachers of
the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the "sinners" and tax
collectors, they asked his disciples: "Why does he eat with tax
collectors and 'sinners'?" On hearing this, Jesus said to
them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not
come to call the righteous, but sinners." (Mark 2:15-17, NIV)
Jesus
came to call the sinners like you and me friend. You do not have to be
in locked doors anymore. You can come as you are to Jesus in your sin.
He came for you and me in our sin to redeem us and deliver us.
We
just went through GOOD FRIDAY and RESURRECTION SUNDAY.
They
are both for all of us to experience in Christ Jesus. Don't stay away
from Jesus because you feel you have to get things together before you
can come to Him. When you do that you are still leaning on to your own
understanding and not trusting in the Lord to begin the Good Work in
you. We are powerless to change ourselves for only the finished work of
Christ on the CROSS OF CALVARY and His HOLY SPIRIT working in our lives
can do that. You and I need to rest totally on the Lord's GRACE to
change us and transform us for His GRACE is TRANSFORMING GRACE.
"You see, at just the right time, when we were
still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone
die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly
dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we
were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified
by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through
him! For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him
through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled,
shall we be saved through his life! Not only is this so, but we also
rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now
received reconciliation." (Romans 5:6-11, NIV)
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean
not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he
will make your paths straight." (Proverbs 3:5-6, NIV)
We do
not just become His children to be SAVED BY HIS GRACE but also to
experience His LIVING GRACE in Christ alone the hope of glory. It is ALL
GRACE my friend.
When
you get down on yourself because you messed up, when you blame yourself
when you messed up, you can be ASSURED, JESUS STILL LOVES YOU and is
there to FREE YOU FROM YOUR BONDAGES.
Do you punish yourself for the mistakes you
make thinking you deserve this punishment for what you have done?
Do you do that?
If
you do, I want you to know Jesus paid all your punishment so you can be
free in Him. If you need to be disciplined, let the Lord discipline in
you in His loving way. We deserve more than punishment for our sin and
God restored us in Christ Jesus because of how much He loves us. If
Jesus did so much for us, who are we to think we can punish ourselves
for this and that we have done. When we do that we are depending on the
punishment to set us free the next time but it just does not happen that
way.
My
Pastor Hugo shared with me an example of a person who struggles with
pornography. Even if that person gouges his eyes out so he does not ever
look at those pictures, clips, etc again, he cannot gouge out his
thought processes because the root problem is not addressed. Only Christ
can free the person from pornography as Christ works slowly in the
person's life.
Friend, in the same way Christ wants to work in our lives helping us in
our shortcomings by His POWER. Let us receive it knowing we are loved by
the Lord! When His discipline comes it is based on love and for our own
good too. Praise the Lord. Let us rest in Him and the power of His
Resurrection.
It is
time to give your burdens to the Lord and move on. It is time to rest in
Him and the community He wants you to be part of. Yes, friend Jesus
loves you so much and does not want you to go it alone but among a body
of believers He will provide for you to minister unto you and He daily
ministers unto you.
"Jesus said, Come to me, all you who are weary
and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn
from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for
your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." (Matthew
11:28-30, NIV)
His
GRACE will TRANSFORM you daily and will continue to do that all of your
life. Slowly, Jesus will peel away through all the layers of your
struggles and sins and there will come a day when your SANCTIFICATION
will be complete. Right now we all are in the PROCESS OF SANCTIFICATION.
But we all can claim the promise of Philippians 1:6:
"Being confident of this, that he who began a good
work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ
Jesus." (Philippians 1:6, NIV)
So
friend, come as you are in your sin. You and I know we have locked doors
in our heart that we do not want anyone to know about especially the
Lord. But the GOOD NEWS is Jesus already knows all our sins that
separate us from God. Jesus came to break that separation and restore us
to God. Jesus came to reconcile you and me to the Father. That is
exciting to know and can free us from the LOCKED condition.
You
are I cannot save ourselves apart from the SAVING GRACE of Jesus Christ
and that GRACE is available to you friend if you have never come to know
Jesus Christ as your Lord and Personal Savior. If you are a Christ, you
know you are SAVED BY HIS GRACE, but you still don't experience His
Grace to the fullest because you have stopped there.
You
don't have to stop there for His GRACE does not stop with SALVATION but
SALVATION is just the beginning of the GOOD NEWS. The LIVING GRACE of
Christ as you run the race of life is available to all of us right now
this moment. We can experience His LIVING GRACE through His Word and His
Spirit working in our lives to free us from DEPENDING SOLELY ON
OURSELVES to accomplish things instead of DEPENDING ON THE LORD working
in and through us to accomplish things.
May
you experience the POWER OF CHRIST'S RESURRECTION this day, and give Him
the LOCKED areas of your life too!
You
don't have to be locked away anymore for Christ is here to free you.
How
do you look at GODISNOWHERE?
One
of my pastors, Pastor Hugo shared this example yesterday at the
RESURRECTION DAY SERVICE in the combined worship service of Pittsburgh
Chinese Church-Oakland & Oakland International Fellowship:
If
you look at it as GOD IS NO WHERE, you will still be lost in your sin
and be in bondage locked away in your sins and problems.
But
as my Pastor spoke to the congregation and spoke to me, I am here to
tell you that GOD IS NOW HERE.
Yes,
friend God is alive and wants to bring a transformation in your life
through the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ for He paid the penalty on
the cross to rescue you and me and came back to life to save us and live
with us.
Yes,
friend that is exciting to know that we can experience HIS SAVING GRACE
& LIVING GRACE.
When
we mess up, we can go to Jesus with our shortcomings and He will forgive
us and restore us to Him.
"Therefore, if
anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has
come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ
and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the
world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he
has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore
Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.
We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him
who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the
righteousness of God." (Colossians 5:17-21, NIV)
"For the wages
of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our
Lord." (Romans 6:23, NIV)
"But if we walk in the light, as he is in the
light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his
Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive
ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is
faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all
unrighteousness." (1 John 1:7-9, NIV)
"Locked Out? Christ Kindles Emancipation
Daily!" (L.O.C.K.E.D)/"/"Why have you L.O.C.K.E.D yourself away?"
Prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus, thank you so much for dying for our sins and coming
back to save us by your grace. It is by GRACE we have been saved through
faith in you and not of any works we do so I praise and thank you for
saving us. Thank you Jesus so much when we have locked ourselves away
because of our sin and what others will think about us, You intervene
and come to receive us in our sin. That is so awesome to know and I feel
so loved by you Jesus that you paid the price for my sin and don't count
my sins against me anymore but given me the life of reconciliation in
you. Because you have first reconciled me to you now I can be reconciled
to others. Help me Jesus for I cannot do anything on my own but need you
Jesus. Thank you so much Jesus that I am SAVED BY YOUR GRACE and can
LIVE BY YOUR GRACE. Thank you for your TRANSFORMING GRACE. I love you
and need you always Jesus. We all do Lord for if it were not for your
GRACE we will be lost. Thanks so much Jesus. I pray for the one right
now struggling in their sin and they don't want to come to receive your
forgiveness because they feel they have to fix things on their own but
we know we cannot fix anything without your intervention and SPIRIT
working in us. Thanks for your SPIRIT and you will work in and through
us to TRANSFORM us and make us what you want us to be. Help us never to
give up no matter what sins we struggles knowing that you are working in
us and through us. Thank you so much Jesus. Thank you for hearing our
prayers and answering us. IN YOUR NAME I PRAY JESUS! AMEN!
Friend, we need Jesus because we have been separated from God due to our
sin. Because of our sin, Jesus had to pay the price to become our bridge
so we can reach God now not of our own good works but because of the
finished work of Christ, the Lord on the cross.
"For it is by grace you have been saved,
through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not
by works, so that no one can boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9, NIV)
May
you come to know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Personal Savior becoming
His offspring so you can spend Eternity with Him. He is waiting for you.
Come as you are. Please do not reject the gift of God.
May you be uplifted knowing
Deliverer openly understands bringing total Salvation! Amen!
If
you would like to invite Jesus Christ into your heart and make Him a
daily part of your life, you can this very moment. You will never be
alone. You can claim God's promises for you in the Bible and see them
come true, before your eyes, in His wonderful timing. You don't have to
wait for a special time to come to the Lord. You can come right now as
you pray this prayer, meaning it in your heart and finding your new
identity in Christ Jesus.
Make this your prayer. Don’t let
the enemy deceive you into thinking you need all the answers before
coming to Christ. Let me just assure you though you may not have all the
answers right now before coming to Jesus, He will answer them slowly.
Yes, He will for I know our Redeemer will! Amen!
Prayer:
Dear Jesus, thank you for foreshadowing once again about SAVING US when
you spoke to the disciples about the KERNEL OF WHEAT. Thanks for dying
for our sin so we can have Eternal Life and be saved when we turn to
you. The previous day, you allowed Mary to wash your dirty/stinking feet. Anything
you do has a reason and you foreshadowed what you would do for us one
day on the cross. You washed away all our sins with your precious
cleansing blood on the cross. Thank you so much Jesus. No matter what we
have done or where we have been, we can know that you love us and paid
the ransom to deliver us from the stench of sin. Thank you Jesus. I
accept the antidote you offer and want you to wash me clean with your
precious cleansing blood so I can have new life. My sin I give it all to
you so you can cover me with your righteousness. Help me Jesus. I don't
want to live like I have been living. I don't want my life to smell
because of the stinky/dirty sins of my life. I know you offer cleansing
and washing so I come to you now and receive it. Thank you for forgiving
me of all my sin when you paid the price on the cross for me which I
accept now. Please give me new life Jesus. Come into my heart and make
my heart your home. Live in me Jesus and I will live for you and help me
to serve you the rest of the days of my life so I can say, "Lord Jesus,
ANYTHING, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE, I am ready" as you strengthen me and walk
with me and talk to me. I love you Jesus. I accept you as my Lord and
Personal Savior. Please be my Lord and Personal Savior. Thank you for
helping me learn about what Mary did for you and the implications for
our own lives. Thank you that you have heard my prayer and answered me
giving me new life. In Your Name I Pray Jesus! Amen!
No matter what you feel in your heart,
know that Jesus has come in and resides with you! You are not alone! To
make your walk strong with the Lord, spend time in prayer talking to Him
as you would to a friend. You don’t need special words to talk to the
Lord. Spend time in His Word reading Psalms and turning them into
prayer. Next allow God to heal you and speak to you through the Gospel
of John or Gospel of
Mark before moving on to other Books of the Bible! Slowly, let the Lord
show you to which Scriptures He wants you to go to next. It is also important to be part of a body of believers to
help you grow in the faith. Find a Bible believing church that preaches
the Word of God from Genesis to Revelation proclaiming Jesus Christ our
crucified and risen Lord who brings us hope, healing, and help! But
beware of churches who do believe in the Word of God completely but
there is no freedom in Christ but legalism involved.
As a professional, it is not too late to join a
church! As a student, it is not too late to join a fellowship on campus this new year of 2009! May the Lord's presence and peace fill you with His
love now and forever! Amen!
Friend, if you have prayed this
prayer and meant it in your heart, you are a new creation in Christ and
all old things are passed away and everything has become new! You may
feel something or may not but don’t base it on feelings but base your
new life in Christ on the promises of our Savior who will never leave
you nor forsake you! Amen!
Spend time in His word and let the Lord
speak to you! Start out in the Gospel of John! You can also check out
the Gospel of Mark which are the devotionals I have been going through.
Learn from Jesus through study and prayer. Also find yourself a church
fellowship and a college fellowship you can be part of where you can be
part of a community of believers to supplement your own walk with the
Lord. Let it be a Bible-believing and Bible-breathing church! Believe in
Bible Live Eternally!
