“Why Your Foes Will Take A Fall?”

Editors Note: This devotional was originally sent through email on  Thurs, 11 March 1999 10:54:59 -0500 (EST) to InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF) students and others who wanted to receive daily devotionals at the University of Pittsburgh while I was serving at IVCF! It is being published for the first time on Pittsburgh Standard today with any revisions ITALICIZED.

SCRIPTURE:
"O LORD, how many are my foes! How many rise up against me! Many are saying of me, 'God will not deliver him.' But you are a shield around me, O Lord;  you bestow glory on me and lift up my head." (Psalm 3:1-3)

We see a contrast and words of repetitions in these verses:

Repetitions are very important because they imply important concepts:

Here we see the words 'you' and 'me' used twice.

The 'you' refers to the Lord.

The 'me' refers to the Psalmist.

The Psalmist tells the Lord 3 things: (Asking for deliverance)

            1. How many are my foes!

            2. How many rise against me!

            3. Many say that God will not deliver me.

At the same time he uses the word 'but' to make a contrast.

The Psalmist once again tells the Lord 3 things: (Receiving deliverance)

            1. But you O Lord are a SHIELD around me.

            2. You bestow glory on me.

            3. You lift up my head.

What comes to mind when you think about 'foes'?

What comes to mind when you think about a 'shield'?

What does it mean to 'bestow glory?'

Why do people put their head down?

What example can you take with you?

The Psalmist realizes that he is in trouble because of the foes he is facing that rise against him. He is also told that God will not deliver him. The Psalmist was as human as we are. I want you to think carefully of all the foes you are facing, all the foes that raise against you.

There will be people who tell you that there is no God to help you. They will tell you God does not exist and you are just believing to have a crutch. They may very well get to you and confuse you. The Psalmist can relate to that. Yet, he did not give up on God even though he was down. He exercised his faith and brought his concerns to the Lord.

We can infer the Psalmist had his head down. People usually have their head down when things are not going well in their life. Yet, he comes to the point where he is able to lift up his head. He credits God for helping him to lift up his head once again. He also knows no matter what he is facing or what others say negatively about God, God has become his shield. A shield is something that protects you. The Psalmist is being protected from his foes and those who try to confuse him concerning God.

I do not know what you are facing right now. Foes can be people you may see as enemies but they can also be more. Each of you knows the foes you are facing. Foes are anything that hinder your relationship with the Lord or bring destruction in your life.

You maybe discouraged because things are not going the way you want them to go?

Please remember you can bring all your foes to the Lord. He wants to be your Shield and protect you. Many times we may want something so badly that we may be mad with God if we do not get it.

Do you do that?

It is human nature to get upset when things don't go our way. But, it does not have to be that way. Whatever God does not give you, He knows it is not the right timing. Wait upon the Lord for He loves you so much and He will lift you up too. He can bestow glory upon you as He did upon the Psalmist.

May you rest in the Lord knowing He is True and real as the sun that gives you light. The Lord wants to be your Light if you allow Him to. He is the Light of the world who will help you walk on the right path!  Amen!

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank you so much for loving me so much. I love you and need you. Thanks so much when foes rise against us, we need not be afraid because you are with us. You will rise us up no matter what others say. Thank you for being our Helper. We need you Oh Lord. Thanks so much Jesus! Thou art a shield around me, the glory and lifter of my head when I have it down. Thanks so much Jesus. Help us to always trust in you! In Your Name I pray Jesus! Amen!

 If you want to give your life to the Lord and make Him Lord of your life, please don't wait. You can ask Him into your life right now. A Christians' road in life is not easy nor peachy but it is worth it. Belonging to the One who created you and loves you with unconditional love is the one you need to belong too. No matter what you have done or where you have been, the Lord reaches out to you with His loving arms of love. If you have been a Christian and feel like you have gone away from the Lord, you can come back to Him and rededicate your life to Him. He will take you in and love you with unconditional love. Do not let guilt stop you from coming to the Lord. He loves you so much and cares for you! Come, Come to the Lord!

Prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus, I do not know everything I need to know about you. But, I heard that you love me so much and you are the Light. You said if I come to you, I will not stay in darkness. I come to you Lord as I am with all my baggage. I ask you to take it all from me and give me a new beginning.  I know all the sins in my life have affected me and I need you now. I am willing to give my life to you and ask you for forgiveness. Please forgive me of my sins and come into my heart. Please make my heart your home. Live in me Jesus and I choose to live for you and serve you the rest of the days of my life. There are certain habitual sins in my life that you alone can help me overcome and I rely upon you. Thank you Jesus. I thank you that you want to be my Lord and Personal Savior. Please be in control of my life. I thank you when you forgive me, you give me a new clean slate and I can have a new beginning.  I confess you as my Lord and Personal Savior and believe in my heart that you died for me and rose again to give me eternal life that I can one day spend eternity with you forever. Thank you Jesus! Thank you, you have heard my prayer and answered me. I belong to you and you will take care of me. Thank you Jesus! In Your Name I Pray Jesus! Amen!

You may have felt something, you may have not, but the important thing to know is that Jesus Christ is in your life! Don't just go by feelings.
