BIBLICAL THEMES: SPOILER ALERT
Spoiler Alert I:
After the ambassador is shot, Lee goes after the person
responsible for shooting him and comes face to face with his brother who
works for the Chinese Triad. He cannot get himself to capture his
brother resulting in his escape. Kenji is happy with the life he has
chosen but it brings grief to Lee because of what could happen to Kenji.
This reminded me of a Bible verse dealing with laws to be followed
and also a passage that deals with the end times.
“The LORD commanded us to obey all these decrees
and to fear the LORD our God, so that we might always prosper and be
kept alive, as is the case today.” (Deuteronomy 6:24, NIV)
"Brother will betray brother to death, and a
father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have
them put to death. (Mark 13:12, NIV)
Spoiler Alert II:
When a person of the triad is captured Lee and Carter try to make
him speak but all he speaks is French so they get a translator who is a
nun who chooses not to translate bad words. The person is bent on his
evil ways but the nun wants to follow the ways of the Lord.
This reminded me of choices because all of us have choices that we
need to make. The choices we make will determine whether we are living a
godly life or an evil life.
“But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you,
then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the
gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the
Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household,
we will serve the LORD." (Joshua 24:15, NIV)
"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of
your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according
to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."
(Ephesians 4:29, NIV)
Spoiler Alert III:
When Carter finds out that the women he wanted to go to bed
with might have been a man, he gets really disgusted. It was refreshing
to see that disgust on Carter’s face because he was emphasizing a sexual
relationship should be between a man and a woman and not the same sex.
The woman assures him that she is not a man whatsoever.
This reminds me of passages in Scripture that speak out against
homosexuality and any sexual immorality among other sins.
“Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit
the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor
idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders
nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers
will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But
you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of
the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” (1 Corinthians
6:9-11, NIV)
Spoiler Alert IV:
When Lee and his brother have a showdown! His brother’s
intent is to kill him and he does slightly injure him. But, every
opportunity Lee has he takes to try to save his brother. Even then, his
brother tried to kill him. Eventually, Lee’s love for his brother turned
him around and he gave up his life to save his brother so both don’t
die. This was such a touching scene of the love Lee had for his brother
no matter how evil he was and how that love changed his brother’s heart.
This reminded me of loving our enemies and the Lord’s unconditional
loves towards us no matter how bad we have been. It is his love that
changes us and transforms us.
“Therefore if thine is enemy hunger, feed him; if
he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire
on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.”
(Romans 12:20-21, KJV)
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's
mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to
God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to
the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your
mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his
good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:1-2, NIV)
“How great is the love the Father has lavished on
us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”
(1 John 3:1, NIV)
“You see, at just the right time, when we were
still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone
die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly
dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we
were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:6-8, NIV)
QUESTIONS TO PONDER:
1. We see the actions of Inspector
Lee when he comes face-face with his brother who shot the person Lee was
supposed to protect. What is your reaction to the actions of Inspector
Lee?
2. What would you do if ever you came upon a situation where you had to
face a family member who has committed evil?
3. What would you do if you come across a family member who has put
their eternity in danger because of their belief system?
4. Why do you think Carter reacted in the way he did when the woman he
was with took of her wig? What does it tell us about human beings
decisions.
5. What is more important and wise: to make decisions with our heart or
with our mind? Why or why not?
6. Why do some people make good choices and other people make bad
choices? Are we really responsible for the choices we make if it is
inheritance, why or why not? What if it is our environment, why or why
not?
7. What changed the heart of his brother to give up his life so Lee
could live? Who has done that for you, for there is someone who has done
that for all of us. What will you do to repay the One who gave up His
life for you and me so that we can have Eternal life and be transformed
as we turn to Him no matter how bad our life has been?
