"Bust Bonds Before Bringing Benefit for Baseball"Wednesday, Aug 08, 2007 Editors Note: The editorial here represents the majority opinion of the Pittsburgh Standard editorial board! It is disappointing to see people celebrate the home run record of Barry Bonds whose athletic ability has been marred by suspicion of steroids use. Until Bonds has been completely cleared of steroids allegations, the news media or fans should not have given him the publicity he has received. The ball that a fan caught should not even be worth a penny! What kind of example is society setting by putting a value on a ball that could have been the fruit of the poisonous tree doctrine! The fruit of the poisonous tree doctrine is a legal terminology that states anything that is a result of an illegal action will make everything else void even if every action that follows is done legally. For example, if a Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) agent breaks the door of a suspected steroids maker and seizes his drugs without a warrant then anything following that cannot be admissible in court even if everything was done legally such as getting a warrant to search the car because of information received during the illegal search. Following that reasoning, if any person had hit home runs while on steroids then every home run since that time should not be valid either because the home run increase is based on what was originally done illegally. For example, if home runs 699, 700, and 701 were done while high on steroids, then it would be unethical to reward anyone for home runs 702 through 756 even if those were not because of steroids allegations. The number would have never come to 756 without the numbers that came because of steroids allegations. Bonds should not be glorified or rewarded for hitting home run 756 until this whole steroids issue is put to rest. If it is found that he did not take any, then by all means he should get all the celebratory opportunities for his great accomplishment. Until then please refrain from giving Bonds publicity or praise.
