‘City by the Sea’ is a touching thriller about a dysfunctional family comprised of a cop and a killer, suspected of being a cop killer. Robert DeNiro plays detective Vincent LaMarca in search of a suspected cop killer named Joey Nova played by James Franco. While on the search, he is haunted by memories of his dad being executed for the murder of a baby.

Detective LaMarca finds out that Joey Nova is actually his son Joey LaMarca who he has not seen for many years. LaMarca is torn between being a father to his estranged son who he has not known for many years and being a homicide detective looking for justice for his partner’s killer. The movie comes to a stunning climatic conclusion where father and son come face to face.

It has explores biblical themes of sacrifice, forgiveness, and reconciliation.

Questions to Ponder:

Would you be willing to sacrifice your career if it means having to group against family? Why or why not?

Should the sins of a parent be a reflection on their children? Why or why not?

Do we have a choice for our actions or do genes play a role in our actions? Why or why not?
