Students need to watch out for churches that support candidates who go against Biblical Scripture!Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry spoke at an African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church world conference in Indianapolis, IN, after choosing Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., to be his running mate this fall. I am bit disappointed that a church would want someone to speak at their world conference who supports abortion and who opposes a Federal Marriage Amendemt on gay-marriage. What kind of message does the church send when it allows speakers to speak who are in opposition to certain moral values as Kerry-Edwards ticket shows! Kerry showed his faith in public and quoted biblical scriptures here and there when speaking at the conference. One of things he quoted as saying was “faith without deeds is dead” Is Kerry stating that his faith is alive or dead? As a Catholic, he has gone against the Word of God itself when he supports a women’s right to abort her child when Scripture forbids abortion. Biblical scripture is clear on the practice of homosexuality but Kerry does not seem to oppose it. I am not talking about people who have homosexual tendencies and desires but those who follow through on them. Being tempted of a vice is not sin but giving into it is. He speaks to the convention as a follower of Christ when his own actions don’t seem to support that. No one is perfect and we all make mistakes and commit sins as human beings but Kerry is not even repentant on his stance on certain moral issues. Students that are looking for a church to go to should find out where the church stands on moral issues and its position on the sole authority of Scripture, whether it is a Bible believing church or not. This in no way is to say that every AME church out there supports candidates who are for abortion and same-sex marriages. This election year candidates will attend church functions and try to galvanize the votes of their members. It is one thing for a church to accept to serve those who do not follow Scripture but another thing for any church to support those that go against biblical scripture. Kerry-Edwards ticket does not give a church that supports them a good name. A church should be the body of believers who follow the teachings of Christ and when they fail, going to the Lord with a repentant heart. I am again appalled that Kerry would speak about Scripture in a church conference while his own actions do not follow suit. I do hope Kerry realizes what it means to be a follower of Christ and repent of his political stance on issues that go against Biblical scripture. Just because this church supported Kerry does not mean every AME church out there is supportive of Kerry. There are many African-American churches and members who are very religious and follow biblical scripture on issues. To them I applaud and thank them for taking a counter-cultural stance!
