Police officers should not kill students to protect reputationPeople believe the police are here to serve and protect the community. Serving and protecting the community can occur in different ways. One of the ways police can serve and protect students is to intervene during loud parties that cause disturbance to others. This is not the only way police can serve and protect. Sadly, when an officer arrested a student at a loud party this past April, he acknowledged of later having a sexual relationship with that student. Now the student is dead and the former Columbia police officer, Steve A. Rios, 27 is charged with 1st degree murder in the slaying of Jesse James Valencia, 23 of the University of Missouri-Columbia. The student was slain on June 5 and his body was recovered near his apartment with his throat cut. We expect police to serve and protect instead Rios wanted to gratify his sexual desires with a male student. This action was immoral and it did not matter to him. When he was going to be exposed, he did the unthinkable and killed Valencia. What would make an officer who is married go after a male college student, we do not know! What we do know is that this officer engaged in a homosexual act and now a student is dead. He did what is unethical too! Even if the person he had a sexual relationship was a female, it would not have made it any right because he is already married and anything premarital is immoral. Humanity is fallible and those who follow the flesh will fulfill the lust of the flesh and Rios became a victim to the lust of the flesh and took Valencia as his victim. It is a sad day for the Columbia police department to have one of their own be charged with murder and a sad day for the family, friends, and students of University of Missouri-Columbia for a student passed away with so much life ahead of him. His only mistake was being at a loud party and being arrested by Rios after an altercation and then being involved in a sexual relationship. Students need to be careful when they come face to face with police officers too. We never know who will go off the edge next. Officers are supposed to serve and protect but in this sinful world some kill and protect themselves. Rio is accused of killing and has brought a bad name to police officers. Let us hope for justice in this case and keep those affected by this tragedy in prayer.
