Student who faked her own abduction could have been helpedWhen a college student went missing on March 27, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, it is estimated that police spent $96,000 to look for her. It gained national attention and so many volunteered to look for her. It turns out that student Audrey Seiler, 20, of Rockford, Minn faked her own abduction because she did not want people to make a big deal of the personal problems she was facing. According to reports, as a sophomore at UW-Madison she already was depressed because of her aunt’s death and her relationship with her boyfriend gone sour. She did not want to make a big deal of her problems which could have been handled locally within the university community and among her loved ones instead her action to fake her abduction turned the spotlight nationally on her. She wanted to deal with problems on her own and disappeared making the community pull its resources to look for her. All the time spent looking for someone who faked their own abduction could have been spent elsewhere where abductions and crime was really happening. Seiler is paying the price for her actions and has to do probation for three years and pay the police department some of the money it spent looking for her. She is forced to pay the department but what will she do for all those who spent time searching for her. People could read about Seiler and take the story on a sour note but a lot of good has come out of this story for Seiler to appreciate and feel loved. Whatever problems she was facing, she did not want any help and later came to find out how much people from the Madison community and people from her hometown in Rockford, Minn cared for her when they were involved in the search to find her. Lots of time was spent looking for her. She knows now how much people care for her no matter what problems she is facing and can get help. It is wrong what she did and there is no denying that but sadly when depression strikes people, they do things that they may not otherwise do. Seiler fell into that mode but that does not excuse her actions. I just wish she had been willing to open up what she was going through with people in the university community. This is on the supposition that she was able to find people in the community that cared enough for her not to judge her but love her and help her through what she was going through. To see the amount of help she received when people thought she was abducted, I believe there definitely were people in the community who would have helped her. I only wish the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF) chapter at UW-Madison knew about her situation because they would have wonderfully taken care of her and shown her not only their love but Christ’s love. I have known many IVCF students from UW-Madison and seen their love for Jesus Christ which overflows to show love for their fellow students on campus even if they are not believers in Jesus. Sadly, it is not always easy to find those that are depressed, down, and facing problems because people can bottle it up and put on a mask as if everything is okay. If you are into reaching out to others and caring for them regardless of what university you are at, look for signs among students you interact with or walk amongst to see if there is something you can do for them. People cannot bottle up everything all the time and signs will show. One thing that has been effective which has been done by IVCF students on different universities is asking people if they have any prayer requests they can be prayed for. Random students have opened up and shared their requests to be prayed for. There is no need for Seiler to have faked her abduction if she was reached out to first. It won’t be easy but it can be done. Even if we are able to reach one student and change their life around, it is worth it. You can be that one! Students come to college for an education but there are times education takes a back seat when problems from personal life interfere. Maybe that is happening to you. Know that there is hope, help, and healing as there are those out there who love you and want to care for you. Never give up! Sometimes time out is needed and Seiler chose that to receive help. There is nothing wrong with taking time off from school to work out issues if that is the best recourse of action! Express your view
