The Da Vinci Code novel and movie is packed with lies that are presented
as fact. Each day, every false statement, heresy, or theological
misstatement in the novel or movie, will be demystified with
evidence. There are more than 108 lies in the Da Vinci Code that Brown
wants people to believe as fact in a fictional novel. My job will be to
expose the lies and present the truth. We will be looking at LIE # 2
today.
LIE #2: “The marriage of Jesus and Mary Magdalene is part of the
historical record.” (p. 265)
Dan Brown wants you to believe that the marriage of Jesus and Mary
Magdalene is part of the historical record.
But is it?
Or is it a delusion of a man whose writings in the
Da Vinci code are not only delusional but deceptive?
Brown does write a fictional novel so people
should not care whatever is presented in the novel, right? WRONG!
It is categorized as a fictional novel but he uses names, places, and
organizations which are part of the historical record and attributes
falsity to them. Those that do not know their history when they see
names like Jesus, Mary Magdalene, Priory of Sion, etc will think
everything he writes about them is true but it is not!
Today, we are going to look at his lie regarding Jesus’ marriage to Mary
Magdalene which is supposed to be part of the historical record
according to Brown.
HISTORICAL RECORD:
There is no evidence in any first-century record that indicates a sexual
or marital relationship between Jesus and Mary Magdalene existed.
Jesus lived on the earth until 33 A.D. If Jesus was married, people
would have known about it. Even if followers of Christ wanted to keep a
secret because they did not want anyone to know Jesus was married, there
would have been others who did not follow Christ, who could have written
about it or kept a record of it. Yet, there is no historical record of
it from secular historians too!
Let us think about it logically from a news reporter point of view. A
reporter loves to publish a story especially a story that would have
made top headlines. Jesus’ marriage to Mary Magdalene would have made
those headlines. Even if Christians wanted to keep a lid on it, this
kind of story would have leaked especially by people who did not believe
in Jesus. This however did not happen because the incident never
happened and was not true regarding what Dan Brown states. It makes a
deceptive intriguing novel to base it on that premise. First of all if
this was not a premise of the novel, it would not have made money nor
been so controversial.
MY REASONING:
I shared with you that there is no historical evidence to show Jesus’
marriage to Mary Magdalene and now I want to share with you my own
reasoning from a news reporters point of view why this could not have
happened.
To share my reasoning with you, the premise that Jesus Christ is divine
has to be accepted. Jesus’ divinity was addressed last week! Then, all
the reasoning should be followed to its conclusion to show why I believe
it could not have been possible for Jesus to have been married to Mary
Magdalene.
I believe Jesus is divine who became God-incarnate and lived on the
earth for 33 years having the characteristics of divinity and humanity!
In His humanity, He died on the cross to save sinners because He alone
lived a life without sin and had no sin. In His divinity, He knew He
alone could save humanity because He alone was perfect. Only His
cleansing precious blood could wipe away the sins of all those who came
to Him to receive forgiveness for the remission of their sins. Jesus’
blood was pure and not contaminated.
Let us look at some of these questions:
What happens to blood that becomes contaminated?
It is not pure anymore!
What happens when to people marry each other?
If a marriage occurs then they become one and God’s commandment
is to procreate after marriage!
Who is Jesus?
Jesus is holy and perfect!
Who is Mary Magdalene?
Mary Magdalene was a sinner from whom Jesus cast “seven demons”.
Why cannot good works get us into heaven?
Heaven is a pure place and God in His holiness cannot allow sin
to enter His presence. If sin cannot be allowed into the presence of
God, then a human being who has a sinful nature cannot be allowed into
Heaven. Since all human beings have a sinful nature because they have
not been able to keep all the Ten Commandments, they cannot be accepted
into Heaven because of God’s Holiness.
Is there hope yet for anyone?
The hope lies in the divinity and humanity of Jesus Christ. In
His divinity, Jesus decided to give His life for humanity. In His
humanity, Jesus went to the cross and shed His blood on the cross to
save humanity. It is His blood that became the antidote to cleanse
people of their sin and for God to see them Holy in His sight. This is
because of what Jesus Christ did for them and their acceptance to be
cleansed by the precious blood of Jesus. For only His blood has the
power to cleanse humanity of their sin. Now when God looks at a person,
He sees the cleansing blood of Jesus Christ covering them so His
judgment passes over them. They are given entrance to heaven because God
sees Christ’s righteousness through them. So, they can be saved! It is
because of the pure cleansing blood of Jesus Christ.
We have already seen that no good works of human beings can get them
into heaven because for all the good works human beings do, they have
also done bad works. Good works do not nullify the bad works.
What happens when a pure glass of water has a drop
of cyanide put in?
It is not pure anymore. It does not matter if the water is 99.9% pure if
there is a 0.1% of cyanide in it. That is another way to look at our
lives in the sight of God. Even if we think we are 99.9% but have that
0.1% sin in our lives, we are not pure to have access to Heaven. How let
is look at the life of Mary Magdalene.
Mary Magdalene had seven demons in her which Jesus cast out. We are not
told why she was demon possessed except that Jesus rescued her and that
she followed Jesus.
Dan Brown wants you to believe that Jesus now decided to marry a person
whom he had cast ‘seven demons’ out of her. Please! She was a follower
of Jesus Christ but she in no way was perfect. She was a sinner. Jesus
is perfect.
If Jesus who is divine married someone who was a
sinner, what would happen?
Remember, Jesus gave a sermon regarding marriage and how man and woman
who are married become one. So, if Jesus had married Mary Magdalene then
there would have been a mixing of the divine with a sinner. This cannot
happen. This is my reasoning.
REASONING FROM SCRIPTURE:
I believe the Bible is the Word of God, not the Bible becomes the Word
of God (as Liberal theologians believe) nor do I believe the Bible
contains the Word of God (Liberal theologians believe). Those who
believe the Bible becomes the Word of God base it on subjectivity and
agreeability. If they are reading the Bible and a revelation comes to
them then to them it has become the Word of God. Those who believe the
Bible contains the Word of God, do not believe in the entire authority
and inerrancy of Scripture. Rather, they believe if man cannot agree on
some passage, etc then that passage etc cannot be the Word of God. An
example is the sin of homosexuality. Whatever is agreeable, to them
contains the Word of God and what is not is not the Word of God. Those
who believe the Bible is the Word of God take the authority and
inerrancy of Scripture and base their lives on breathe in bible live
eternally (B.I.B.L.E)
I believe the Bible is the Word of God. Based on the Bible, I intend to
show that if we reason through the Scriptures, Jesus could not have been
married.
Jesus replied. "But at the beginning of
creation God 'made them male and female.' 'For this reason a man will
leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will
become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what
God has joined together, let man not separate." (Mark 10:6-9)
Jesus is talking about man and woman becoming one in the confines of
marriage. If Jesus married Mary Magdalene, they would have become one
flesh. We saw earlier what the problems with that would have been. Jesus
was not just a man to decide to marry. Jesus lived as a human being with
the characteristics of divinity. But, the life of Jesus was lived so one
day He could save humanity for only He could with His precious cleansing
blood. Jesus knew he was going to die and become a sacrificial Lamb of
God for the world. The time Jesus had was spent mostly with his
disciples teaching them, with the sick to whom he preached and also
healed, and doing ministry about the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus did not
want to entangle himself with the things of the world and get distracted
from His mission.
“But he continued, "You are from below; I am
from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.” (John 8:23,
NIV)
“I came from the Father and entered the world;
now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father." (John 16:28,
NIV)
“I will remain in the world no longer, but they
are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect
them by the power of your name—the name you gave me—so that they may be
one as we are one.” (John 17:11, NIV)
Jesus’ oneness was with the Father as His prayer states and not with
Mary Magdalene.
If Jesus were married to Mary Magdalene, then when He was crucified, he
would have told John to take care of his wife too but all we know is
that Jesus told John to take care of his mother.
“Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his
mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus
saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he
said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son," and to the disciple,
"Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into
his home. (John 19:25-27, NIV)
After preaching in the synagogue and healing a demon possessed man in
the synagogue, Jesus went over to Peter and Andrew’s house where Peter’s
mother-in-law was sick. Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law. If Jesus
were married, Jesus would have needed a place to live with his wife.
Since this was not his world to live in but His mission was to save
souls, He had come to seek and save the lost, not being married.
“Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of
the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."
(Mark 8:20, NIV)
If Jesus was married, he would have definitely had a place to live with
his wife but Mary Magdalene was not his bride. However, Jesus does talk
about a bride which will be addressed later.
Jesus answered, "How can the guests of the
bridegroom fast while he is with them? They cannot, so long as they have
him with them. But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken
from them, and on that day they will fast.” (Mark 2:20, NIV)
“You yourselves can testify that I said, 'I am
not the Christ but am sent ahead of him.' The bride belongs to the
bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for
him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom's voice. That joy
is mine, and it is now complete. He must become greater; I must become
less.” (John3:28-30, NIV)
“Let us rejoice and be glad and give him
glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made
herself ready.” (Revelation 19:7, NIV)
“I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem,
coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully
dressed for her husband.” (Revelation 21:2, NIV)
The bridegroom is Jesus Christ and His bride is the church, followers of
Jesus Christ, by His Way, by His Truth, and by His Life! The bride is
not Mary Magdalene. Jesus saw the church as His bride and His mission
has been to be the perfect bridegroom!
As the movie DaVinci Code opened across the
theaters on May 19, 2006, which speaks against the church and most importantly
degrades the Name of Jesus Christ, we need to make ourselves available to
speak the truth to the falsity presented in the movie and the novel. If you
plan to watch the movie or have read the book and have questions or your
faith seems to be shaken, please email me or give me a call at 412-720-4579
so we can discuss the false claims in the book that are presented as fact
even though the book itself and the movie is presented as fiction. May the
Lord bless you and guide you!
