Spiritual Review of "Hitch"
Ramesh C. Reddy "Hitch" (2005) Picture Source: http://www.imdb.com
Main Cast: Plot Synopsis: The movie “Hitch” is about a Date Doctor Alex 'Hitch' Hitchens(played by Will Smith) who helps guys who want to date the girl of their dreams with strategies to be sweep them of their feet. Content Review: This is a feel good comedy movie that is worth watching more than once. It is rated PG-13 for thematic elements. Spiritual Implications: SPOILER ALERT In the movie, Hitch gets heart-broken when he sees the love of his life with another man. He does not want anyone else to go through what he went so he decides to become a Date Doctor to help people. This reminded me of a Bible verse dealing with why we go through what we go through at times. “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4, NIV) In the movie, we also see what gossip does to so many people who are affected by it. Gossip is wrong in the movie and in real life. I am reminded of it through Scripture. “A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy man keeps a secret.” (Proverbs 11:13, NIV) “A perverse man stirs up dissension, and a gossip separates close friends.” (Proverbs 16:28, NIV) “Without wood a fire goes out; without gossip a quarrel dies down.” (Proverbs 26:20, NIV) In the movie, we see the Date Doctor able to help everyone but himself get their prize. For the woman of their dreams is their prize. This reminds me of a Scripture passage that talks about telling others what to do but if we do not follow the same advice, what could happen. "Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. (1 Corinthians 9:24-27, NIV) In the movie, we see the Date Doctor help people so they can be in a relationship with the one they love. However the Date Doctor is not perfect. This reminds me of another doctor who is a Soul Doctor who desires to save people’s souls. He is perfect and does it so people can be in a relationship with Father God. I am talking about the Great Physician Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ loves you so much and wants you to be in a personal relationship with Him and lead you in all aspects of your life. Hitch compares in no way with Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is perfect and He will give you the One of your dreams as you rely upon Him and let Him be your Lord and Personal Savior. Jesus says, “I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture.” (John 10:9, NIV) “And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Acts 2:21) “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:12, NIV) “No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are." (Acts 15:11, NIV) “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him! For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!” (Romans 5:8-10, NIV) “But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. (Romans 10:8-10, NIV) “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9, NIV) “This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men—the testimony given in its proper time. And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying—and a teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles.” (1 Timothy 2:3-7, NIV) Questions to ponder:
