SCRIPTURE:
"He
then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and
be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and
that he must be killed and after three days rise again. He spoke plainly
about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But when
Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. "Get behind
me, Satan!" he said. "You do not have in mind the things of God, but the
things of men."(Mark 8:31-33, NIV)
OBSERVATION:
I asked myself what can I learn about Peter from
this passage?
1. Peter took Jesus aside and began to
rebuke Jesus.
2. Peter was rebuked by Jesus.
3. Peter heard Jesus say, "Get behind me, Satan"
"You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."
INTERPRETATION: I asked myself the significance of Jesus'
interaction with Peter?
Jesus did not rebuke Peter because Peter was open with Jesus but because
Peter was leaning on to his own understanding. Jesus was trying to
prepare them for what lies ahead but Peter though He knew that Jesus is
the Christ, the Anointed One, the Messiah, He was putting Jesus in a box to
make Jesus what he wanted Him to be.
Peter could not stand Jesus saying
that He will be killed and must not have even actively heard Jesus
saying, 'after three days I will rise again'.
If Peter had actively
listened to that part he would have actively asked Jesus
'what do you
mean Jesus that you will rise again in three days?' No, Peter may have
been upset that if Jesus were going to be killed then how could Jesus be
the Messiah, the Anointed One to deliver them from the oppression of
Rome, etc as Peter claimed Jesus was. It seemed like Peter was so
focused on liberation that he missed the big picture.
Jesus calls him on that very
strongly by saying, "Get behind me, Satan, you do not have in mind the
things of God but the things of men"
Those are very strong and
powerful words by Jesus because Jesus was commanding Satan to get behind
Jesus by rebuking Peter. In other words, Jesus saw that Satan was
blinding Peter to the Truth and what Jesus' true purpose was. So, Jesus
intervened to give Light to Peter by rebuking Peter and Satan who was deceiving him. By
having the things of men in mind instead of the things of God, Peter
gave an opening for Satan to work.
Satan would have loved nothing
better than Jesus forcefully liberating Jews from the hands of the
Romans using hate speech, inciting riots, or just using His commands to
see the fall of Rome and its citizens. And that is what Satan wanted
Peter and the other disciples to focus on.
Remember that Jesus rebuked
Peter in front of the other disciples including Judas Iscariot, who
later betrayed Jesus. I believe Peter started to focus on Christ after
Jesus gave the command for Satan to get behind Him.
INTERPRETATION: I asked myself the significance of Jesus
saying to Peter,
'Get behind me, Satan'?
Jesus' command is very significant because Jesus is letting Peter
and the disciples know that as long as they focus on the things of men
than the things of God, they are giving their allegiance to Satan and
his ways. When Satan is given allegiance over God, than of course
humanity will focus on the things of men instead of the things of God.
By making the command,
'Get behind me Satan', Jesus is not only
rebuking Peter but Satan's work in Peter's life. Peter may
have been focused on liberation-theology but Jesus wanted Peter to focus
on Him and Him alone. Now if Jesus told Satan to get behind Jesus, it is
to also show Peter and the disciples to focus their minds on Christ and
Him alone. Even in this passage, Jesus alludes to being God and tells
them as long as they are focused on Him, they will be focused on the
things of God because He is God.
(To be
continued)
IMPLICATIONS: I saw important implications for my own life. I cannot put Jesus
in a box and want Jesus to be what I want Jesus to be. Jesus is who
Jesus is. He is the Christ, the Anointed One, the Messiah! Jesus is Lord
and He is God of the Universe so I must give my allegiance to God and
Him alone. For that to happen, I cannot lean on to my own understanding
of what I think Jesus should be or do.
That was Peter's problem because Peter's rebuke of Jesus was focused on
Jesus telling them that He would
be killed. Oh no, if Jesus is killed who will liberate us from the
tyranny of Rome may have been going through Peter's mind. Yet, Jesus
calls Peter on that and uses a strong command for Satan to get behind
Jesus. Jesus is delivering Peter first here even though Peter wanted
deliverance from Rome.
Jesus' purpose was not to come
to liberate the Jews from the Romans as they expected Him to do. No,
Jesus had a higher purpose than they could understand until Jesus was
killed and came back to life on the third day. More than anything Jesus
wanted the disciples to see that true liberation only comes from Him and
Him alone.
HOW GOSPEL GIVES
TESTIMONY REGARDING L.I.B.E.R.A.T.I.O.N:
It is in the Gospel of Jesus Christ
where true liberation is found in my life. Nothing has brought true
liberation to me except basking in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and
His loving grace. It is His grace that saved a wretch like me. It is
His grace that helps me live my life as He wants me to live. It is
grace that takes me home as the song 'Amazing Grace' goes.
Liberation is not found in the things I do on my own for then it
becomes 'leaning on to my own understanding' but it is found at the
Cross of Christ being JUSTIFIED BY HIS GRACE and SANCTIFIED BY HIS
GRACE. I know it is a process but I thank the Lord that I can be
TRANSFORMED BY HIS GRACE where true liberation theology begin's
Christ's way and not my way.
I ask you now dear friends,
whose liberation theology do you follow in life?
Dear friend, we see the interaction between Peter and Jesus. Peter could
not stand Jesus telling them that He would be killed so Peter rebuked
Jesus. By doing that Peter showed Jesus that he had the things of men in
mind more than the things of God. And the things of men in this
situation would have been the liberation of the Jews from the Romans
instead of the liberation Jesus came to give which is focused on the
things of God.
Friend, this has a ripple
effect to this day when we follow after the things of men instead of the
things of God. When we follow liberation theology man's way, it becomes
liberal theology that goes against Scripture being the final authority.
Instead, we will start believing it is okay to ordain homosexuals as
pastors, etc.
There is a reason Jesus
rebuked Peter by saying 'Get behind me, Satan'.
It is because Peter
allowed Satan to let him focus on the things of men including deliverance from the oppression of Rome, etc instead of love towards those they perceived as
oppressors.
Yes, we need to love others but loving
others is never loving the sin. We have a choice who we will
follow whether it is the liberation theology of liberal theologians or
the liberation theology of Christ
who wants to truly deliver all of us from the clutches of Satan, whether
we are black, white, brown, yellow, etc.
Jesus did not come to give
Judas Iscariot, Peter, Simon the Zealot or other disciples what they
wanted but Jesus came to give them what they needed. Jesus came to give
us what we need and not necessarily what we want. They and we all
need liberation from sin. The root of
the problem is sin.
It is this deadly virus known
as sin that separates us from the things of God and makes us focus on the
things of men. We have allowed this virus to spread and Satan's work to
continue because we are so self-focused on what man can do to turn
things around without the intervention of God Almighty.
God already knew no matter
what man does, man cannot reach God or truly be liberated without His
intervention
so God in His love for humanity did the unthinkable when He came as
Jesus Christ, God-incarnate into this world being born of a virgin, grew
up, and began His mission of liberating the people not necessarily from
Rome but from the issues of the heart and the deadly virus known as sin.
To combat sin in our lives and
liberate us from Satan and his ways, Jesus Christ took upon Himself the
sins of humanity as only He could because He is and was the perfect
sacrificial Lamb of God without sin.
He who
had no sin became sin for us that we might become the righteousness of
God.
Jesus was killed when He went to the cross as spikes
of thorns went through his head, nails were pounded into His hands and
feet so that the reddest antidote could flow to cleanse us from all our
sins and liberate us with freedom in Christ.
The reddest antidote was made
available on the cross and when Jesus came back to life on the third day
as He prophesized, Jesus was providing this antidote to all humanity to
save them only if they would receive the antidote.
Jesus became the
donor for us to liberate us from Satan and his deadly virus that holds us
prisoner. Now when Jesus died on the cross and absorbed the sins of
humanity, at that very moment Jesus made it possible for us to receive
Him when we turn and call upon Him because then we will be covered by
the precious blood of the Lamb of God.
Friend, this is true
liberation theology focused on the things of God to deliver humanity
than the things of men. Once we are liberated from this sin that so
captivates us we are able to yield to Christ who becomes the focus of our
lives. When Jesus becomes the focal point than His Way, His Life, and
His Truth will be what we strive for to liberate us. When all humanity
seeks Christ and His deliverance, transformation of lives will occur and
this is what will get rid of racism, sexism, pride, hatred, etc but it
starts with Jesus Christ and Him alone and not with the liberation
theology of hate that is many times preached.
To those that were oppressed,
Jesus said He came because the Spirit of the Lord is upon Him to deliver
them and throughout Scripture we see Christ's deliverance in people's
lives started with their own human condition than with outside forces.
Jesus did not start His deliverance by delivering the Jews from Rome.
The deliverance from Rome
slowly started as Romans started to be converted to Christ and His ways.
Eventually that did spread and people though persecuted held on and gave
their allegiance to Christ instead of Caesar.
Friend, our allegiance should
be to Christ knowing He liberated us from the bondage of sin when we
turned to Him.
No, not one is good. Yes, all
have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
The wages of sin is death, but
the gift of God is Eternal Life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Yes, friend our redemption and liberation
begins when we follow the liberation theology of Jesus. To follow
the liberation theology of Jesus, we need to believe the Bible is the Word of God,
not the Bible contains the Word of God, or becomes the Word of God. When
we hold to the other views, we substitute what we think Jesus will be
about, and make our decisions, teachings, and even hateful speech on
our perception of the Bible.
The Word of God gives us how
you and I can truly be liberated. It starts with the teachings of Christ
and allowing Christ's work to manifest in our lives including the power
of His resurrection that we may gain Christ and His righteousness as we
bury sin by the sacrificial death of Christ on the cross for us.
Liberation does not start or
end with man-made teachings. Those who follow man-made teachings
become a danger to society and a nation than when they follow God-made
teachings and His ways.
This is not to say that
power-hungry people did not use Christianity shamefully for their own
gain, for sadly that has happened. Once again it is because instead of
allowing Jesus Christ to transform lives to liberate them from sin, they
have allowed sin to liberate them to do their own things.
IN SUMMARY
APPLICATION REGARDING L.I.B.E.R.A.T.I.O.N:
I need to only follow the liberation
theology of Jesus Christ by focusing on Jesus and believing Bible is
the Word of God from Genesis to Revelation revealed by divine
inspiration!
So, friend, may you and I
learn that true liberation only comes in Christ alone and not through any
man-made means. Christ needs to be at the center of our lives to be
liberated and live for Him. May you come to desire to follow the
liberation of Christ than any human being.
"Lord Is
Bringing Emancipation Everyday Redeeming All Those In Oppression
Now!"/"Whose L.I.B.E.R.A.T.I.O.N theology do you follow in life?"
Prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus, I love you so much. Help me to show my love to you by
the fruit I produce that comes only from you working in my life through
the transformation power of the Holy Spirit. Thanks so much Jesus. Oh
Lord, thank you for teaching Peter that true liberation only comes from
you when we turn to you and have the things of God than the things of
men. Oh Lord, after you rebuked Peter, commanding, 'Get behind me Satan'
you were telling Him to focus on you and you alone. You also alluded to
being God here again. Oh Lord Jesus, I love you. You alone offer
humanity and us liberation. No human being can offer the liberation all
humanity needs which only comes from you. Lord Jesus, thank you for
bringing emancipation everyday redeeming all those in oppression now.
You have done that for me and so many that came to you. You liberated me
by your precious cleansing blood that I can live my life for you as I
yield to you. Help me Lord to never let go and hold on to you. Thank you
for dying for my sin and coming back to life on the third day to save
me. Help us to be so focused on you that we give your Way, your Life,
and your Truth to others. I pray for the one that does not know you and
facing oppression that you would deliver them and bring them to you Oh
Lord that they may experience the power of your resurrection and find it
is through your grace and nothing they have done that they can be
redeemed and saved. Thanks so much Jesus. Thank you for hearing our
prayers and answering us. In Your Name I Pray Jesus! Amen!
May you experience the POWER OF
CHRIST'S RESURRECTION this day, and give Him the LOCKED areas of your
life too so you can experience His PEACE as you become an ACTOR in the
film called LIFE being directed by your DIRECTOR, JESUS CHRIST who comes
to give JOY and PEACE.
You
don't have to be locked away anymore for Christ is here to free you and
give you peace to live out your actions.
How do you look at GODISNOWHERE?
One of my pastors, Pastor Hugo SHARED this
example one Sunday at the
RESURRECTION DAY SERVICE in the combined worship service of Pittsburgh
Chinese Church-Oakland & Oakland International Fellowship:
If
you look at it as GOD IS NO WHERE, you will still be lost in your sin
and be in bondage locked away in your sins and problems finding no
peace.
But
as my pastor spoke to the congregation and spoke to me, I am here to
tell you that GOD IS NOW HERE.
Yes,
friend God is alive and wants to bring a transformation in your life
through the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ for He paid the penalty on
the cross to rescue you and me and came back to life to save us and live
with us.
Yes,
friend that is exciting to know that we can experience HIS SAVING GRACE
& LIVING GRACE.
When
we mess up, we can go to Jesus with our shortcomings and He will forgive
us and RESTORE us to Him and we will find peace in Him.
"Therefore, if
anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has
come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ
and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the
world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he
has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore
Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.
We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him
who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the
righteousness of God." (Colossians 5:17-21, NIV)
"For the wages
of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our
Lord." (Romans 6:23, NIV)
"But if we walk in the light, as he is in the
light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his
Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive
ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is
faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all
unrighteousness." (1 John 1:7-9, NIV)
Friend, we need Jesus because we have been separated from God due to our
sin. Because of our sin, Jesus had to pay the price to become our bridge
so we can reach God now not of our own good works but because of the
finished work of Christ, the Lord on the cross.
"For it is by grace you have been saved,
through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not
by works, so that no one can boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9, NIV)
Come to Jesus as you are and pray this prayer to accept Jesus as your
Lord and Personal Savior. He will transform your life around! Praise the
Lord! You don't have to have all the answers! You can come as you are!
Prayer:
Jesus, I thank you for being the BREAD of Life. You are the Living BREAD
of my life. Thank you for coming from Heaven and giving your life for
the life of the world. You sacrificed yourself for humanity. Thank you
Lord when we eat of you symbolically making you part of our life,
digesting what you teach us by following you, we can be living
Eternally, and the fruit that comes will reflect and resemble your life.
I want that Father God. I want that Lord Jesus! I want that Holy Spirit!
I know of a lot of people who partake of Holy Communion where the BREAD
represents your body broken for their sin and the juice represents your
blood shed for their sin. When we partake of Holy Communion, we are
reminded that we are remembering you. I want to remember you always Lord
Jesus. But for me to remember you always, I need to know you and
acknowledge everything you said you are. So right now I acknowledge that
you are my Lord and Personal Savior who died and rose again to give me
life from sin. So right now, I come to you and say how sorry I am for my
sin and living a life on my own. I repent of my sin and ask you to
forgive me of my sin with your cleansing blood which I accept. Wash me
and I will be clean from this infection of sin. Come Lord Jesus and
please become part of my life as you live in me and I will live for you.
I thank you Jesus for coming into my heart and making my heart your
home. Thank you for living in me Jesus and I will live for you and serve
you the rest of the days of my life. I do need your Spirit to reside in
me and work in me and through me so I surrender all that I am and will
be to you. Whatever your will is for me, please give me the strength and
willingness to bear it and rejoice in you. Thank you so much Jesus. I
thank you Jesus for becoming my Lord and Personal Savior. I thank you
Jesus you have heard my prayer and have answered me. I thank you that I
am your child Oh God. I thank you for becoming my only Way to Eternal
Life. In Your Name I Pray Jesus! Amen!
No matter what you feel in your heart,
know that Jesus has come in and resides with you! You are not alone! To
make your walk strong with the Lord, spend time in prayer talking to Him
as you would to a friend. You don’t need special words to talk to the
Lord. Spend time in His Word reading Psalms and turning them into
prayer. Next allow God to heal you and speak to you through the Gospel
of John or Gospel of
Mark before moving on to other Books of the Bible! Slowly, let the Lord
show you to which Scriptures He wants you to go to next. It is also important to be part of a body of believers to
help you grow in the faith. Find a Bible believing church that preaches
the Word of God from Genesis to Revelation proclaiming Jesus Christ our
crucified and risen Lord who brings us hope, healing, and help! But
beware of churches who do believe in the Word of God completely but
there is no freedom in Christ but legalism involved.
As a professional, it is not too late to join a
church! As a student, it is not too late to join a fellowship on campus this new year of 2009! May the Lord's presence and peace fill you with His
love now and forever! Amen!
Friend, if you have prayed this
prayer and meant it in your heart, you are a new creation in Christ and
all old things are passed away and everything has become new! You may
feel something or may not but don’t base it on feelings but base your
new life in Christ on the promises of our Savior who will never leave
you nor forsake you! Amen!
Spend time in His word and let the Lord
speak to you! Start out in the Gospel of John! You can also check out
the Gospel of Mark which are the devotionals I have been going through.
Learn from Jesus through study and prayer. Also find yourself a church
fellowship and a college fellowship you can be part of where you can be
part of a community of believers to supplement your own walk with the
Lord. Let it be a Bible-believing and Bible-breathing church! Believe in
Bible Live Eternally!
