SCRIPTURE: "What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his
SOUL?
Or what can a man give in exchange for his SOUL? If anyone is ashamed of
me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man
will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy
angels." (Mark 8:36-38, NIV)
OBSERVATION:
I asked myself what are the two questions Jesus
poses?
1. What good is it for a
man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his SOUL?
2.
Or what can a man give in
exchange for his SOUL?
INTERPRETATION: I asked myself the significance of
Jesus focusing on man's SOUL?
Jesus had just addressed the disciples and crowds with the promise:
"For whoever wants to
save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for
the gospel will save it."
Now Jesus assures them that
there is nothing this world has to offer that is greater than winning
their SOUL. Jesus wants those listening to be SOUL winners and know
there is no good in gaining the whole world at the expense of forfeiting
their SOUL.
Jesus knows there are people
in this world who are willing to 'forfeit their SOUL' for the fame, fun,
and fortune this world has to offer.
To Jesus, the SOUL is so
important than anything this world has to offer so Jesus does not want
His followers to go after the things of the world that will make them
give up their SOUL.
Yes, there are things in this
world that will cause us to give up our SOUL or Jesus would not say,
"What good is it for a man to gain the whole
world, yet forfeit his SOUL?"
(To be
continued)
IMPLICATIONS:
I saw important implications for my own life here. It can be tempting to
gain the whole world and what it offers with its fame, fun, and fortune
but I need to be very careful that I am not attracted to this world to
the point of gaining the the things this world has to offer at the
expense of forfeiting my SOUL.
HOW GOSPEL GIVES ME
TESTIMONY REGARDING S.O.U.L:
There was a time I put the accolades the world has to offer over the
Lord by my actions! I made obtaining all 'A' grades an
obsession. A 'B' grade was like a B-sting, C-grade was just cruel,
D-grade was dumb, etc. Instead of giving Jesus first place in my
life, I made grades my idols.
It is one thing to aim for good grades for the glory and honor of
the Lord and another thing to aim for worldly reasons.
Their is nothing wrong in aiming for good grades especially A & A+ which
I strived for but the problem was I put so much emphasis on the GRADE
itself for my own pleasurable reasons of gaining fame and fortune from
this world that I did not give first place to Jesus anymore. Jesus
basically became my 'genie in the bottle' to go to when I wanted another
'A' grade. My SOUL was in danger of being magnetized into the things of
this world and losing the focus on the Eternal.
It became so bad that I became
really depressed in trying to gain the things of this world when I
should have been joyful with the Lord by my side. Worldly affairs took
over but the Lord Jesus never abandoned me. Jesus knew that I had given
my SOUL to Him and chose to live for Him daily but Jesus also knew I was
now putting one foot in the Kingdom of God and one foot outside the
Kingdom of God.
Jesus in His grace and mercy
did not abandon me to the things of this world for the things of this
world that I thought would give me fame, fun, and fortune became more of
a burden than a blessing to me. Aiming for the 'A' grade should have
been so the Lord could be honored and glorified even through my
education but I had gone for self-glorification. That is the danger when
we take our focus of Jesus.
At a Billy Graham Crusade, I
had decided to rededicate my life to the Lord over the things of this
world because I did not want to forfeit my SOUL to the enemy. I realized
I will either be serving the allures of this world which Satan wants me
to do or I will be serving Jesus Christ and asking Him to make my SOUL a
winner but I cannot do both.
So, since that day majority of
the time I have told myself:
I will focus on the Lord seeking His Kingdom first over everything else
in this world.
I will do everything for the glory and honor of the Lord.
I will work hard and cheerfully for the Lord.
I will learn knowledge to help other children of God.
I will give my best to the Lord taking the Lord's help, depending on the
Lord completely, and leaving the results in the Lord's Helping Hands.
That is how I approached my
education and my life since then majority of the time. This meant in
many classes I did not even check my grade until my transcript came if
there was no need for revisions, etc to keep my focus on Christ in my
education too and not on the grades.
Mind you that I did get a lot of 'A'
grades but interestingly I don't even use those 'A' grades now. They
are just letters on a piece of paper. When those 'A' grades were a
result of me putting the Lord first in my life, I had a wonderful
testimony to share that benefited my SOUL too.
I remember one year when I
made a 4.0 for the first time in college in hard law classes, etc when
my focus was on Christ and His Kingdom's work. I made a point when it
came to my studies, I would not let that interfere with my time with the
Lord or in the ministry He called me to do. I was focusing on Christ so
I had a peace regardless of what grade I got but was ecstatic to see a
4.0.
What is such a blessing is not only
did I get a 4.0 but I also had been a blessing to others by putting
40 hrs into ministry with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship as I
focused on Jesus Christ and His Kingdom values. My SOUL belonged to Jesus and
I want it to belong to Jesus everyday of my life. Putting Christ first
in my life has given me JOY: Jesus first, Others second, yourself last.
The world will tempt me
everyday but with Christ on my side, I will triumph. I never want to
skip my time with the Lord Jesus in solitariness, my time in church cell
group if there is not an emergency at work, my time at worship services
on Sunday, my time at college fellowships, etc because of exams,
projects, etc but plan ahead. I don't want to give up the healthiness of
my SOUL for the things of this world and neither should you. Grades is
only one example.
I ask
you now dear friend, what have you done with your S.O.U.L in life?
Dear friend, the SOUL we have in us can belong to Jesus Christ, the
Commander-in-Chief of our lives or it can belong to Satan, the Commander
of the legions of demons who will do anything to take us away from
Jesus. Jesus knows what Satan will try to do and how Satan will use the
things of this world to make us forfeit our SOUL. That is why Jesus made
the profound statement, 'What does it profit a man
if he gains the whole world but loses his SOUL '
Friend, Jesus does not want
our SOUL to be lost to Satan because we go after the things of this
world to the point that we do not seek the Kingdom of God first.
Jesus reminds us
'Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and all its
righteousness and all these things shall be added to you' (Matthew 6:33,
NIV)
Whether we are in college, in
the work force, in the home, etc we are all called to seek the things of
the Kingdom first instead of aiming for the things of the world. This
means putting God first in everything whether it is academia, career,
relationships, etc because if we don't we will go our own way and
jeopardize our own SOUL.
Take an
example in academia:
People could major in Philosophy and take the words of the earthly
philosophers over what God's Word says and in the process jeopardize our
SOUL if we believe the earthly philosophers who teach there is no God
over what the Bible teaches.
Take an
example in career:
People could decide to go into a career such as being a stripper in
clubs, pose naked in magazines, etc to make a lot of money gaining the
things of this world and putting our SOUL in jeopardy because we are
going against God's Word.
Take an
example in relationships:
People decide to date and even marry an unbeliever in Christ going
against the Word of God which states, 'Be
not yoked with unbelievers' which
specifically addresses marriage but decide to go ahead anyway because
they are in so much love. The problem here is they have put so much love
on a person than their love for God to the point they are okay to go
against God's Word.
Take an
example in politics:
In elections, people decide to vote for certain candidates because they
personally like them and their views but if they do not test their vote
with Scripture and allow God to direct them and lead them, they are
again going their own way thinking they know what is best and not
wanting God to interfere when it comes to politics. There is a danger in
that too because they are compartmentalizing their faith and politics
when Jesus wants to be 100% part of their lives. Whoever they decide to
vote for, their
vote should be tested with Scripture. For me personally I have always
been convicted to vote for candidates promoting sanctity of life and
sanctity of marriage candidates. I don't know about you but seek the
Lord in elections too for we all have to do that.
Friends, the bottom line is
whatever decisions we make if it is to make strides in the world's
standards over God's standards we put our SOUL in jeopardy because we
are choosing to gain the things of this world and forfeiting our SOUL.
Jesus loves us so much and
wants us to be saved from the enemies lies and corruption Satan offers,
so Jesus made a way that we don't have to forfeit our SOUL to Satan.
"While
we were yet sinners Jesus died on the cross for us."
Jesus took upon Himself the
sinful things of this world in all its allureness that cause us to be
separated from God by nailing them to the cross but it was He who was on
the cross. Jesus died for you and me shedding His precious cleansing
blood by absorbing all our sin so that we can have access to God when we
turn our lives over to Him. In essence, we are turning our SOUL over to
Him. Nothing in this world can be exchanged for our SOUL except the
precious blood of Christ that was used for our redemption.
Yes, friend Jesus loves you so
much that He redeemed you by going to the cross, dying on the cross,
being buried, and coming back to life on the third day to save. You can
live a victorious life with Jesus as you focus on Him. When you focus
away from Him and realize you have done that, God in His faithfulness
can be depended on to forgive us and cleanse us from all
unrighteousness. May you realize that Savior offers our liberation!
Praise the Lord!
"Savior
Offers Our Liberation! (S.O.U.L)"/"What have you done with your S.O.U.L
in life?"
Prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus, thank you so much for speaking to the crowds and your
disciples about the SOUL. You do not want us to go after the things of
this world that will forfeit our SOUL. Lord, I know there is nothing
this world can offer for me to go after that will keep my SOUL intact
except going after what you offer in Heaven. When I seek the things of
God over the things of men then I have chosen to deny myself, pick up my
cross, and follow you. I am sorry Lord and now I have chosen to give up my life here on earth
that I may gain the Eternal life you have to offer. Oh Lord, I pray you
would help us focus on you and you alone in all we do. We need your help
Jesus and we thank you that you died on the cross for our sins to
liberate us from the things of this world. We need your help always.
Help us please Jesus. Thank you so much. Thank you for dying for my sin
and coming back to life to save me as I turn to you. I ask you to
forgive me Lord and help me to walk in your ways. I pray for the one who
does not know you Lord that they would give their lives to you and to
the usage of your plan. We love you Jesus and depend on you. Help us and
guide us Oh Lord. Thank you so much for hearing my prayer and answering
me. In Your Name I Pray Jesus! Amen!
May you experience the POWER OF
CHRIST'S RESURRECTION this day, and give Him the LOCKED areas of your
life too so you can experience His PEACE as you become an ACTOR in the
film called LIFE being directed by your DIRECTOR, JESUS CHRIST who comes
to give JOY and PEACE.
You
don't have to be locked away anymore for Christ is here to free you and
give you peace to live out your actions.
How do you look at GODISNOWHERE?
One of my pastors, Pastor Hugo SHARED this
example one Sunday at the
RESURRECTION DAY SERVICE in the combined worship service of Pittsburgh
Chinese Church-Oakland & Oakland International Fellowship:
If
you look at it as GOD IS NO WHERE, you will still be lost in your sin
and be in bondage locked away in your sins and problems finding no
peace.
But
as my pastor spoke to the congregation and spoke to me, I am here to
tell you that GOD IS NOW HERE.
Yes,
friend God is alive and wants to bring a transformation in your life
through the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ for He paid the penalty on
the cross to rescue you and me and came back to life to save us and live
with us.
Yes,
friend that is exciting to know that we can experience HIS SAVING GRACE
& LIVING GRACE.
When
we mess up, we can go to Jesus with our shortcomings and He will forgive
us and RESTORE us to Him and we will find peace in Him.
"Therefore, if
anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has
come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ
and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the
world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he
has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore
Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.
We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him
who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the
righteousness of God." (Colossians 5:17-21, NIV)
"For the wages
of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our
Lord." (Romans 6:23, NIV)
"But if we walk in the light, as he is in the
light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his
Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive
ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is
faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all
unrighteousness." (1 John 1:7-9, NIV)
Friend, we need Jesus because we have been separated from God due to our
sin. Because of our sin, Jesus had to pay the price to become our bridge
so we can reach God now not of our own good works but because of the
finished work of Christ, the Lord on the cross.
"For it is by grace you have been saved,
through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not
by works, so that no one can boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9, NIV)
Come to Jesus as you are and pray this prayer to accept Jesus as your
Lord and Personal Savior. He will transform your life around! Praise the
Lord! You don't have to have all the answers! You can come as you are!
Prayer:
Jesus, I thank you for being the BREAD of Life. You are the Living BREAD
of my life. Thank you for coming from Heaven and giving your life for
the life of the world. You sacrificed yourself for humanity. Thank you
Lord when we eat of you symbolically making you part of our life,
digesting what you teach us by following you, we can be living
Eternally, and the fruit that comes will reflect and resemble your life.
I want that Father God. I want that Lord Jesus! I want that Holy Spirit!
I know of a lot of people who partake of Holy Communion where the BREAD
represents your body broken for their sin and the juice represents your
blood shed for their sin. When we partake of Holy Communion, we are
reminded that we are remembering you. I want to remember you always Lord
Jesus. But for me to remember you always, I need to know you and
acknowledge everything you said you are. So right now I acknowledge that
you are my Lord and Personal Savior who died and rose again to give me
life from sin. So right now, I come to you and say how sorry I am for my
sin and living a life on my own. I repent of my sin and ask you to
forgive me of my sin with your cleansing blood which I accept. Wash me
and I will be clean from this infection of sin. Come Lord Jesus and
please become part of my life as you live in me and I will live for you.
I thank you Jesus for coming into my heart and making my heart your
home. Thank you for living in me Jesus and I will live for you and serve
you the rest of the days of my life. I do need your Spirit to reside in
me and work in me and through me so I surrender all that I am and will
be to you. Whatever your will is for me, please give me the strength and
willingness to bear it and rejoice in you. Thank you so much Jesus. I
thank you Jesus for becoming my Lord and Personal Savior. I thank you
Jesus you have heard my prayer and have answered me. I thank you that I
am your child Oh God. I thank you for becoming my only Way to Eternal
Life. In Your Name I Pray Jesus! Amen!
No matter what you feel in your heart,
know that Jesus has come in and resides with you! You are not alone! To
make your walk strong with the Lord, spend time in prayer talking to Him
as you would to a friend. You don’t need special words to talk to the
Lord. Spend time in His Word reading Psalms and turning them into
prayer. Next allow God to heal you and speak to you through the Gospel
of John or Gospel of
Mark before moving on to other Books of the Bible! Slowly, let the Lord
show you to which Scriptures He wants you to go to next. It is also important to be part of a body of believers to
help you grow in the faith. Find a Bible believing church that preaches
the Word of God from Genesis to Revelation proclaiming Jesus Christ our
crucified and risen Lord who brings us hope, healing, and help! But
beware of churches who do believe in the Word of God completely but
there is no freedom in Christ but legalism involved.
As a professional, it is not too late to join a
church! As a student, it is not too late to join a fellowship on campus this new year of 2009! May the Lord's presence and peace fill you with His
love now and forever! Amen!
Friend, if you have prayed this
prayer and meant it in your heart, you are a new creation in Christ and
all old things are passed away and everything has become new! You may
feel something or may not but don’t base it on feelings but base your
new life in Christ on the promises of our Savior who will never leave
you nor forsake you! Amen!
Spend time in His word and let the Lord
speak to you! Start out in the Gospel of John! You can also check out
the Gospel of Mark which are the devotionals I have been going through.
Learn from Jesus through study and prayer. Also find yourself a church
fellowship and a college fellowship you can be part of where you can be
part of a community of believers to supplement your own walk with the
Lord. Let it be a Bible-believing and Bible-breathing church! Believe in
Bible Live Eternally!
