Panthers costly gaffes cost championship of Big East Pittsburgh Panthers made it all the way to the Big East Championship after beating Final Four champion Louisville, Backyard Brawl opponent West Virginia, and 2nd ranked team in the nation, Villanova to advance to the Big East Championship only to lose to an unranked defending Big East champion Syracuse Orangemen. Panthers almost pecked by Lousiville Cardinals after 28 point lead! Win 61-56! Panthers later climb over West Virginia Mountaineers, 68-57! Finally, Panthers clobbered the Villanova Wildcats, 68-54 to advance to the Big East Championship game for 5th time in 6 years! Panthers faced the Syracuse Orangemen who won against Cincinnati, #1 Connecticut, and #23 Georgetown in three thriller games to advance to the championship game! Syracuse Orangemen smothered #1 Connecticut Huskies in an OT thriller 86-84 and escaped Georgetown Hoyas to defend their title! Panthers mistakes in the tournament caught up with them on championship night! They continued to be plagued by errors from Aaron Gray who could not finish his lay ups. It was not just Gray's fault but the entire teams. They won as a team and lost as a team. The team made costly errors and the Orangemen capitalized on them who were more hungry. The Orangemen were a bubble team in danger of not making the NCAA tournament until they got hot in the Big East Tournament. They beat the likes of Cincinnati, #23 Georgetown, and the #1 team in the nation, Connecticut to advance to the Big East Championship to face the ranked Panthers. At the championship game in Madison Square Garden, they did not give Pitt fans much to cheer about as the Orangemen took a 9-point lead going into halftime and kept the lead until 8:36 minutes into the second half at which Pitt finally led by one, 48-47 but that went down when the Orangemen continued their hot streak when it comes to the threes. Eventually, the Orangemen long shots going in and Panthers shots missing the basket cost the Panthers not only the Big East Championship but a good seeding in the NCAA Tournament. They are seeded #5 in the Oakland Region and play against #12 Kent State in the first round. Kent State had beaten Pitt in the Sweet 16 few years ago. Syracuse came out hungry and went away satisfied with the Big East Championship winning it two years in a row! This year was special because of the way they won their games including the game against the Panthers. Being the underdog and in New York, they also had the crowd behind them which was not a plus for the Panthers. Photo by Ramesh C. ReddyExpress your view |
