"Last Holiday" (2006)

It is rated PG-13. The runtime is 112 minutes

Main Cast:
Queen Latifah - Georgia Byrd
LL Cool J -  Sean Matthews
Timothy Hutton - Matthew Kragen

Watch 'Last Holiday' Trailer

Plot Synopsis:

The movie “Last Holiday” is about sales clerk Georgia Byrd (played by Queen Latifah) who works in a cooking department of a store when she hits her head and is sent to the hospital. At the hospital she discovers that she does not have much time to live and is going to die. She has a book of possibilities and withdraws all her money to enjoy life for her last days. It is here all her adventures begin

Content Review:

The movie is rated PG-13 for some sexual themes but overall is an excellent movie to watch with your friends and families over and all. It addresses issues such as death, life, love, forgiveness, grace, redemption, humility, second chances, self-esteem, worship, etc.

Spiritual Insights:

For the spiritual insights, Bible verses will be listed which came to my mind while watching the movie. Try to figure out where these Bible verses are applicable in the movie.

DEATH:

Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.” (Hebrews 9:27, NIV)

“My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death assail me. Fear and trembling have beset me; horror has overwhelmed me.” (Psalm 55:4-5, NIV)

HUMILITY:

“Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.” (Numbers 12:3, NIV)

“Your beginnings will seem humble, so prosperous will your future be.” (Job 8:7, NIV)

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:3-4, NIV)

LIFE:

"Show me, O LORD, my life's end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life.” (Psalm 39:4, NIV)

“Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12, NIV)

 FORGIVENESS:

"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” (Matthew 5:43-45, NIV)

"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” (Luke 6:27-28, NIV)

“But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.” (Luke 6:35, NIV)

“Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord. On the contrary: "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head." Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (Psalm 12:17-20, NIV)

 WORSHIP:

“They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” (Acts 2:42. NIV)

 LIFE:

“Unless the LORD had given me help, I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death.” (Psalm 94:17, NIV)

“Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the LORD has been good to you.  For you, O LORD, have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before the LORD in the land of the living.” (Psalm 116:7-9, NIV)

LOVE:

“Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. Love does not demand its own way. Love is not irritable, and it keeps no record of when it has been wronged. It is never glad about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-8, NLT)

Questions to Ponder:

  1. What would you do if you knew you had only a week to live?

  2. How do you treat those that wrong you and what can you learn from the movie?

  3. What happens when we treat those who have wronged us with love?

  4. What is love to you?

  5. What would you honestly do for love?
