“Do You Really Love Or You Think You Love?”

Editors Note: This devotional was originally sent through email on  Tues, 06 April 1999 06:53:55 -0500 (EST) to InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF) students and others who wanted to receive daily devotionals at the University of Pittsburgh while I was serving at IVCF! It is being published for the first time on Pittsburgh Standard today with any revisions ITALICIZED.

SCRIPTURE:
"Listen, all of you. Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you. Pray for the happiness of those who curse you; implore God's blessings on those who hurt you." (Luke 6:27, TLB)

            Jesus showed me the importance of love. When Jesus says to love my enemies, bless those who curse me, and pray for those who persecute me, He means it!

            Oh how easy it is for us to love those who love us! There is nothing to be commended for loving those who love us back! Anyone can do that!

            The true test of our love for the Lord is shown by the love we have for those around us. It should not matter whether they are nice to us or not. The Lord tells us to love others.

            The love is not based on conditions of If-Then pseudo-programs that goes something like this:

           If (person loves you) then
                        love them back
            Else if
               (person does not love you) then
                        hate them back!

            This is the world's way of seeing things but not God's way! God is love!  When reading the verse where Jesus commands us to love our enemies, it dawned on me that Jesus could love each one of us.

            We are all enemies of the cross because all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Yet, it is important for us to realize that God still loves us. He will not ask us to love our enemies if He himself did not love us whem we were His enemies because of our sin and lost condition.

            Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now I am found, tis was grace that taught me to see.

           Jesus himself prayed for his enemies when he was on the cross. He said, "Father forgive them for they know not what they do!" Only a person filled with so much love can pray that even after being flogged, tortured, beaten, and nailed to the cross. Jesus showed so much love and wants us to follow in His example.

            It will not be easy but being obedient to the Savior is worth it!

           May you come to love those you despise and cannot stand. It can only be done as you yourself bask in the Savior's love knowing what He did for you on that Good Friday afternoon. His blood was shed for you because He loved you that much! He is alive and wants you to be part of His Kingdom!

Prayer: 
Dear Lord Jesus, we thank you for the example you set for us. You ask us to love our enemies but it is never easy to love those who have hurt us so badly or plot against us. Yet, you have loved those who nailed you to the cross. Even this day, you love those who try to destroy your Name. Time after time, these enemies who are against you all of a sudden fall in love with you. It is because of the love you show. Thank you Lord! Oh Lord, you have so much love for each one of us. We want to love as you love us. Please forgive us our sins and help us to love you and others.  Thank you for helping us time after time. It will not be easy but we put our trust in thee. Thank you Lord for hearing us and answering us! In Your Name We Pray Jesus! Amen!

 If you want to give your life to the Lord and make Him Lord of your life, please don't wait. You can ask Him into your life right now. A Christians' road in life is not easy nor peachy but it is worth it. Belonging to the One who created you and loves you with unconditional love is the one you need to belong too. No matter what you have done or where you have been, the Lord reaches out to you with His loving arms of love. If you have been a Christian and feel like you have gone away from the Lord, you can come back to Him and rededicate your life to Him. He will take you in and love you with unconditional love. Do not let guilt stop you from coming to the Lord. He loves you so much and cares for you! Come, Come to the Lord!

Prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus, I do not know everything I need to know about you. But, I heard that you love me so much and you are the Light. You said if I come to you, I will not stay in darkness. I come to you Lord as I am with all my baggage. I ask you to take it all from me and give me a new beginning.  I know all the sins in my life have affected me and I need you now. I am willing to give my life to you and ask you for forgiveness. Please forgive me of my sins and come into my heart. Please make my heart your home. Live in me Jesus and I choose to live for you and serve you the rest of the days of my life. There are certain habitual sins in my life that you alone can help me overcome and I rely upon you. Thank you Jesus. I thank you that you want to be my Lord and Personal Savior. Please be in control of my life. I thank you when you forgive me, you give me a new clean slate and I can have a new beginning.  I confess you as my Lord and Personal Savior and believe in my heart that you died for me and rose again to give me eternal life that I can one day spend eternity with you forever. Thank you Jesus! Thank you, you have heard my prayer and answered me. I belong to you and you will take care of me. Thank you Jesus! In Your Name I Pray Jesus! Amen!

You may have felt something, you may have not, but the important thing to know is that Jesus Christ is in your life! Don't just go by feelings.
