Connection?”

SCRIPTURE:
"And as Moses in the wilderness
lifted up the bronze image of a serpent on a pole, even so I must be
lifted up upon a pole, so that anyone who believes in me will have
eternal life. For God loved the world so much that He gave His only
Son so that anyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have
Eternal Life. God did not send His Son into the world to condemn it,
but to save it. There is no eternal doom awaiting those who trust
Him to save them. But those who don't trust Him have already been
tried and condemned for not believing in the only Son of God. Their
sentence is based on this fact: that the Light from heaven came into
the world, but they loved the darkness more than the Light, for
their deeds were evil. (John 3:14-19a, TLB)
Jesus said, 'I AM the Light of the
world. If you follow me, you won't be stumbling through the darkness
but living Light will flood your path!" (John 8:12)
Before looking at these verses, I
wanted to look at the interview between Nicodemus and Jesus found in
John 3 for the context.
I learned that Nicodemus, a Pharisee
sought Jesus out. The interesting thing is that He sought Jesus out
at night. More than likely, night is emphasized because Nicodemus
sought out Jesus secretly. He did not want his colleagues to know
his interest in Jesus.
This is very significant to us.
Do we hide our faith from others because
we don't want them to think we are uncool?
Do we seek out Jesus and read our Bible
only when no one is watching?
If that is the case, we need to ask
ourselves who is most important in our lives:
Is it Jesus or Is it Self?
We cannot have it both ways.
Jesus tells
Nicodemus that unless a man be born-again He cannot enter the
Kingdom of God. Nicodemus is confused and wonders
how a man can go back into his mothers' womb
and be born-again.
Jesus reveals to him that it is not a
physical birth but a spiritual birth. Jesus explains to him how he
can be born again:
Unless a man is born of water and of the
Spirit, he cannot be born again!
We see 2 points emphasized:
1. By water.
2. By Spirit.
This is my interpretation of this verse.
You may not agree with it. If you don't I would love to read your
interpretation of this verse that I may learn from you.
Let's look at the 'Water aspect'. More
than likely this means to be physically born in the mother's womb.
There is a lot of water inside a mother's womb where the baby is
developing.
Another possibility that people may
argue for is 'Water baptism'!
The question arises
how can you be baptized if you do not understand 'what Baptism
means'.
Baptism becomes only meaningful when we
have received 'the Spirit of God' into our hearts. The Spirit of God
(Holy Spirit) makes us realize the significance of Baptism and why
we as followers of Christ should be baptized.
We get baptized
for the reasons stated in Romans 6 (Please look up) and also to make
a public proclamation of our faith.
This can only happen
once we have received the Spirit of God (Holy Spirit) into our
hearts.
To be baptized
without realizing our own sinfulness and without confessing our
sins, baptism becomes futile.
Once we acknowledge our sinfulness
before the Lord and acknowledge Jesus Christ as our Lord and
Personal Savior, we are ready to be baptized.
Let's look at 'By Spirit'. This refers
to being 'spiritually renewed'. In other words, being born again. It
means having a 'Spiritual Birthday' when we give our lives to Christ
and He starts to transform us on the inside through His Spirit.
Jesus also tells Nicodemus just as
'Moses lifted up a bronze serpent on the
pole', He (Jesus) must be lifted upon a pole'.
We need to realize that Nicodemus is a
Pharisee and would be familiar with the reason why Moses had to lift
up the bronze serpent on the pole.
The people were
very rebellious and sinful even after the Lord delivered them from
the hand of Pharaoh and delivered them so many other times. This
made God very angry and he sent snakes to bite all those who were
rebellious. Without a cure, they would die
because
of their rebellion. Moses saw the pain of his people and cried out
to the Lord to spare them.
God told Moses to lift up a bronze
serpent on the pole and whoever looks up to the bronze serpent
lifted upon the pole, they would be healed. People who repented of
their sin and looked up to the pole were healed and those who did
not died.
Nicodemus would remember this incident.
What he may have had trouble with is when Jesus told him that He
(Jesus) must be lifted upon the pole.
This is very
significant because what Jesus told Nicodemus has tremendous
implications even today. We are the rebellious people and God is
angry with us. Our sin has separated us from God and we are going to
die a Spiritual death. Rather than Moses, interceding to God this
time Jesus Christ, interceded on our behalf. He decided to go to the
cross (pole) for our sins. When we look to Jesus upon the cross, our
sins are forgiven and we are washed by the Blood of the Lamb. In
essence, we are healed. Jesus restored our
relationship
with God.
It is very interesting that right after
Jesus told him this, He tells Nicodemus:
For God so loved the world so much that
He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should
not perish but have Everlasting Life.
When Jesus was crucified, all Jesus
spoke to Nicodemus might have made so much sense to Him and He
believed in Jesus. We know this because it was Nicodemus who came
with Joseph of Arimathea to bury Jesus using all the spices they had
brought.
What does it all mean to us?
There is no condemnation for those who
believe in Jesus but those who have not have already been condemned
for not believing in the Son of God.
Without Jesus in our lives, we are
condemned. We need Christ to restore our relationship to Father God.
Jesus has already done His part by going to the cross for us. Now it
is up to us to give our lives to Jesus by surrendering our lives to
Him and looking up to Him! There is no middle ground! If we do not
accept the Light, we are accepting darkness. This is what Jesus
tells Nicodemus too.
Prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus thank you for speaking to me from your Word. Thank
you Jesus for dying for our sins and interceding on our behalf
before Father God. We have been separated from God because of our
sin but now we are restored to a fellowship with God because of what
you have done for us and because we have looked up to you and
surrendered our lives to you. Forgive us for going our own ways. We
acknowledge you as our Lord and Personal Savior and give ourselves
to thee. Thank you just as Moses lifted up the bronze serpent on
the pole and those who were bitten looked up, they were healed, we
too are healed from the venom of sin's bite when we look up to you
Jesus upon the cross you lay. You did that for us by shedding your
precious cleansing Blood so that I can have new life and new birth
as I turn to you. Thank you so much Jesus that there is no
condemnation to those who trust in you Lord and for God loving the
world so much that He gave us you that whosoever believes in you
will not perish but have Everlasting Life. God did not send you to
condemn the world but to save it. Please come into our heart
and make our heart your home. Thank you Jesus for living in us and
we will live for you and serve you the rest of the days of our
lives. Thank you Jesus for being our Lord and Personal Savior. Thank
you Jesus you have heard our prayers and answered us! In Your Name
We Pray Jesus! Amen!
If you want to give your life
to the Lord and make Him Lord of your life, please don't wait. You
can ask Him into your life right now. A Christians' road in life is
not easy nor peachy but it is worth it. Belonging to the One who
created you and loves you with unconditional love is the one you
need to belong too. No matter what you have done or where you have
been, the Lord reaches out to you with His loving arms of love. If
you have been a Christian and feel like you have gone away from the
Lord, you can come
back to Him and rededicate your life to Him. He will take
you in and love you with unconditional love. Do not let guilt stop
you from coming to the Lord. He loves you so much and cares for you!
Come, Come to the Lord!
Prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus, I do
not know everything I need to know about you. But, I heard that you
love me so much and you are the Light. You said if I come to you, I
will not stay in darkness. I come to you Lord as I am with all my
baggage. I ask you to take it all from me and give me a new
beginning.
I know all the sins in
my life have affected me and I need you now. I am willing to give my
life to you and ask you for forgiveness. Please forgive me of my
sins and come into my heart. Please make my heart your home. Live in
me Jesus and I choose to live for you and serve you the rest of the
days of my life. There are certain habitual sins in my life that you
alone can help me overcome and I rely upon you. Thank you Jesus. I
thank you that you want to be my Lord and Personal Savior. Please be
in control of my life. I thank you when you forgive me, you give me
a new clean slate and I can have a new beginning.
I confess you as my
Lord and Personal
Savior and believe in my heart
that you died for me and rose again to give me eternal life that I
can one day spend eternity with you forever. Thank you Jesus! Thank
you, you have heard my prayer and answered me. I belong to you and
you will take care of me. Thank you Jesus! In Your Name I Pray
Jesus! Amen!
You may have felt something, you may
have not, but the important thing to know is that Jesus Christ is in
your life! Don't just go by feelings.
If you have prayed this prayer and meant
it genuinely in your heart, you made one of the most important
decisions in your life. Please let me know as I would like to send
you a free booklet or give it to you in person, to help you in your
daily walk with the Lord. I have read this booklet more than 20
times.
