“What Jesus Did Regarding SEXISM And RACISM!”

Editors Note: This devotional was originally sent through email on  Fri, 14 May 1999 13:54:29 -0500 (EST) to InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF) students and others who wanted to receive daily devotionals at the University of Pittsburgh while I was serving at IVCF! SCRIPTURE:

"Jesus was tired from the long walk in the hot sun and sat wearily beside the well. Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus asked her for a drink. He was alone at the time as his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food. The woman was surprised that a Jew would ask a "despised Samaritan" for anything---usually they wouldn't even speak to them! -- and she remarked about this to Jesus. He replied, "If you only knew what a wonderful gift God has for you, and who I am, you would ask me for some living water!" (John 4:6b-10, TLB)

Jesus decided to go through Samaria to reach the destination, He had to be at. On the way, He became tired and thirsty. This shows Jesus' humanity aspect. Jesus is divine and yet able to relate to us because He became one of us.

Jesus meets a woman at the well and makes conversation with her!

What??? A conversation with a woman?

This was a big deal in those days. Yet, Jesus tackled sexism head on and had a very interesting dialogue with the women addressing her emotional, physical, and spiritual needs as recorded in John 4 in its whole context.

What is more interesting is that she was not a Jewish woman but a Samaritan. Jesus took time to ask a Samaritan woman for water.

What??? Jesus asking a Samaritan woman for water? Why, Jews don't even associate with Samaritans? What was Jesus up to? How could he do that?

He could because He came to be the Messiah for everyone and was setting an example for each of us to follow. Jesus wants us to imitate Him.

The Samaritan woman was really shocked when Jesus spoke to her. Jesus was on the Father's plan and came to do the Father's will. The disciples were shocked too but did not say a word.

They offered him food but Jesus told them that His food was to do the will of the Father and to finish His work. This is where Jesus said He got His nourishment from.

By speaking and interacting with the Samaritan woman, He not only tackled sexism head on but racism. Jesus saw her as a human being who needed to be loved and cared for just like anyone else.

We need to remember that Samaritan's have had bad experience with the Jews. Samaritans were those who were inter-racially married: (Jew with a non-Jew). They even had their own town named for them: Samaria. Jews despised the Samaritans because of the inter-racial marriage. Jesus looked beyond that. Jesus did not despise them but showed love to them.

Jesus offered the woman living water and told her that He was the Messiah she was waiting for.

Later, He tells her that 'the one she is living with' is not her husband and she already had 5 husbands. She suddenly changes the topic out of the blue and talks about worship.

He answers her questions about worship and I have a feeling that He addressed the other issue too privately. The interesting thing is that Jesus pointed out her wrongdoing about 'living together w/o being married' but she did not feel condemned and yet realized what wrong she has done (living together w/o being married)

She actually came to Jacob's well to draw water around this time because probably she was ostracized by the community.

 That's where Jesus met her. From their conversation, she knew that the Messiah was going to come but did not know He was speaking to her until they interacted. After the interaction was over, she left what she came for (water), went to the town and told everyone she met about Jesus.

She found her identity in Christ and not in her shame. When Christ touches the heart of people, they will never be the same again, never. Jesus made such an impact in the Samaritan woman's life that she did not care  about being alone anymore but wanted to share Jesus with the community. Thank you Jesus.

This is very significant because she was touched by Jesus prompting her to share Jesus with others. It is also significant because she was a woman who people listened to and became very interested in what she had to say even though it was predominately a patriarchal society.

They then came and saw Jesus for themselves accepting the woman's invitation. Later, Jesus spent 2 days in Samaria with the people and many came to believe not only because of the woman's testimony but because Jesus reached out to them there. Thank you Jesus.

Jesus reminded his disciples not to wait to do evangelism. My favorite part of Scripture is when Jesus talks about not waiting 4 months from now to do evangelism but emphasizes 'Now is the time'.

The summer time can be a temptation to do our own things and use the fall and spring to reach out to students. I personally think evangelism should be throughout the year. That's why I love to offer stuff in the summer for students too, especially with 'Evangelistic focus'.

Jesus wants to reach out to you to! You maybe in a similar situation that the woman was in or you may feel that you are trapped because of circumstances in your life. Jesus wants to give you hope in spite of what you are going through. He will give you the endurance to get through whatever you are facing. He will point out our wrong doing to take us in the right direction.

What are the applications you can learn from this passage and apply to your own life?

Jesus loves you! Allow His Helping, Loving Hands to reach out to you! Amen!

Prayer: 
Dear Lord Jesus, you know the situations each of us face. You know the hurts, the trials, the problems, the circumstances, and everything else that we face. You know the things that try to rob our joy of knowing you.  We want to say that we are sorry for putting sleep, jobs, career, etc above you. The world may not understand and emphasizes so much other than you. But you are the hope of this generation. You will help us and take us to the area of field you want us to be in. Thank you Jesus.  And Lord please forgive us for all the times we have been disobedient to you and gone our own way. Even now Lord, if we are on the path that you do not want us to be in, please close that door and bring us out of the wilderness we maybe facing because we have not been faithful to you. Please forgive us all our sins. Thank you so much Jesus! Please hear our prayers and answer us Oh Lord. Thank you so much Jesus. Thank you for giving us a new beginning and a start just like you gave the Samaritan woman and the people of Samaria. Thank you for tackling sexism and racism head on. I love you Jesus. Thanks for the woman's testimony that others were touched to. Help us to be faithful to your Word and not ignore the summer time as you give us opportunity. The past is behind us and the present is before us and the future is in your hands. Help us Oh Lord Jesus to be Your Hands and Feet to a generation lost and broken. Let us be the light that shines your Light upon them. Thank you Jesus so much. In Your Name We Pray Jesus! Amen!

If you want to give your life to the Lord and make Him Lord of your life, please don't wait. You can ask Him into your life right now. A Christians' road in life is not easy nor peachy but it is worth it. Belonging to the One who created you and loves you with unconditional love is the one you need to belong too. No matter what you have done or where you have been, the Lord reaches out to you with His loving arms of love. If you have been a Christian and feel like you have gone away from the Lord, you can come back to Him and rededicate your life to Him. He will take you in and love you with unconditional love. Do not let guilt stop you from coming to the Lord. He loves you so much and cares for you! Come, Come to the Lord!

Prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus, I do not know everything I need to know about you. But, I heard that you love me so much and you are the Light. You said if I come to you, I will not stay in darkness. I come to you Lord as I am with all my baggage. I ask you to take it all from me and give me a new beginning.  I know all the sins in my life have affected me and I need you now. I am willing to give my life to you and ask you for forgiveness. Please forgive me of my sins and come into my heart. Please make my heart your home. Live in me Jesus and I choose to live for you and serve you the rest of the days of my life. There are certain habitual sins in my life that you alone can help me overcome and I rely upon you. Thank you Jesus. I thank you that you want to be my Lord and Personal Savior. Please be in control of my life. I thank you when you forgive me, you give me a new clean slate and I can have a new beginning.  I confess you as my Lord and Personal Savior and believe in my heart that you died for me and rose again to give me eternal life that I can one day spend eternity with you forever. Thank you Jesus! Thank you, you have heard my prayer and answered me. I belong to you and you will take care of me. Thank you Jesus! In Your Name I Pray Jesus! Amen!
