“What Do You Bind Around Your Neck?”

Editors Note: This devotional was originally sent through email on  Thurs, 03 June 1999 12:05:34 -0500 (EST) to InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF) students and others who wanted to receive daily devotionals at the University of Pittsburgh while I was serving at IVCF! SCRIPTURE:
"Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man." (Proverbs 3:4)

We see 2 Fruit of the Spirit here: "Love and faithfulness".

We are asked to do 3 things when it comes to 'love and faithfulness':

1. Never let them leave you.

2. Bind them around your neck.

3. Write them on the tablet of your heart.

Let us look at these:

The ball is in your court! You have the option of what you will do with the love and faithfulness given to you. You can let them go or you can hold on to them. Remember God is love and God is faithful! God will not leave you when He has come into your life. Don't leave God and do things your own way. He loves you. Love and faithfulness that bind our lives will bring forth so much fruit. Write them on the tablet of your heart. In the Book of Jeremiah, we learn about the heart being wicked and deceitful, who can know it. It is true that our heart is wicked and that is the reason why we need Jesus. When Jesus comes into our lives He will bring a transformation of change through the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Fruit of the Spirit is 'LOVE, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, FAITHFULNESS, gentleness, and self-control."

We are given a promise that 4 things will happen when we do that:

1. We will win favor with God.

2. We will have a good name in the sight of God.

3. We will win favor with man.

4. We will have a good name in the sight of man.

Let us remember that we cannot earn God's favor just by doing good works because Scripture states that 'all our works are like filthy rags to Him'.  But, the Good News is when the Spirit of the living God resides in us, 'loving people and being faithful' start becoming part of us. His Spirit does the work in us as we yield to Him! The key is to focus upon the Lord!

(Think about KYEOJ: Keep Your Eyes On Jesus!)

It is interesting that when we exhibit the characters of 'love and faithfulness' we will find favor with people and have a good name in the sight of people too!

When we think about it, there is so much pain in the world and so much brokenness because many times we 'lack exhibiting love and faithfulness' to others. May we all come to love one another and be faithful to one another as we are led by the Master Himself! Amen!

Prayer:
Father God we just come before your presence. We just thank you that you are there for us. We thank you for the promises that you give us. Father God you want us to exhibit love and faithfulness. Help us to do that Lord! We thank you how priceless is your  unfailing love. Thank you for speaking to us from your Holy Word! Forgive us Lord when we do things our own way. Help us Oh Lord and let your Spirit lead us and guide us. I pray Oh Lord that you can help us be loving and faithful to those around us and those you have put in our path. Thank you so much Jesus! Thank you for hearing us and answering us! In Your Name I Pray Jesus! Amen! Thanks Lord for loving us so much! Amen!

If you want to give your life to the Lord and make Him Lord of your life, please don't wait. You can ask Him into your life right now. A Christians' road in life is not easy nor peachy but it is worth it. Belonging to the One who created you and loves you with unconditional love is the one you need to belong too. No matter what you have done or where you have been, the Lord reaches out to you with His loving arms of love. If you have been a Christian and feel like you have gone away from the Lord, you can come back to Him and rededicate your life to Him. He will take you in and love you with unconditional love. Do not let guilt stop you from coming to the Lord. He loves you so much and cares for you! Come, Come to the Lord!

Prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus, I do not know everything I need to know about you. But, I heard that you love me so much and you are the Light. You said if I come to you, I will not stay in darkness. I come to you Lord as I am with all my baggage. I ask you to take it all from me and give me a new beginning.  I know all the sins in my life have affected me and I need you now. I am willing to give my life to you and ask you for forgiveness. Please forgive me of my sins and come into my heart. Please make my heart your home. Live in me Jesus and I choose to live for you and serve you the rest of the days of my life. There are certain habitual sins in my life that you alone can help me overcome and I rely upon you. Thank you Jesus. I thank you that you want to be my Lord and Personal Savior. Please be in control of my life. I thank you when you forgive me, you give me a new clean slate and I can have a new beginning.  I confess you as my Lord and Personal Savior and believe in my heart that you died for me and rose again to give me eternal life that I can one day spend eternity with you forever. Thank you Jesus! Thank you, you have heard my prayer and answered me. I belong to you and you will take care of me. Thank you Jesus! In Your Name I Pray Jesus! Amen!

You may have felt something, you may have not, but the important thing to know is that Jesus Christ is in your life! Don't just go by feelings.
