A museum partnership gives Pitt students free access
By Jennifer Koch If University of Pittsburgh students are tired of the ordinary weekends jam-packed with homework and partying, but with no money to spend, they can put their student ID to use. Using it, students can gain entrance to the Andy Warhol Museum at no cost during the spring and fall semesters. Christopher Dobson, a freshman at Pitt, learned that through his engineering mentor, but has yet to take advantage of it. “I plan on visiting the museum eventually, but I haven’t had a lot of free time,” Dobson said. Along with free admittance to the Andy Warhol Museum, a Pitt ID also gets students a free ride on the city PAT buses, which serves as a convenient mode of transportation. To begin a trip to the Warhol Museum, catch the 500 from Oakland directly to the museum. Once on the 500, show a Pitt ID and within minutes the bus will arrive at the entrance to the museum on Sandusky Street on the North Side. When inside the foyer of the museum, instead of paying the regular admission of $8, just flash a Pitt ID. “The Andy Warhol Museum presents a wide variety of special exhibitions and programs that tailor to diverse audiences,” said Gina Frey, a communications associate. The museum has six floors complete with more than 500 pieces of art on display. The admissions employee suggests taking the elevator to the sixth floor to begin the Warhol journey. Once on the sixth floor, immediately observe a series of large wall hangings depicting abstract flower designs and dozens of peculiar pencil sketches of male anatomy. On the other five floors, witness Silver Clouds, an exhibit created in 1966. This exhibit is a room containing a dozen silver helium and oxygen filled square shaped balloons floating through circulating air. Throughout the museum, observe an extensive collection of Warhol’s Pop art like Coca-Cola, Telephone and Campbell's Soup Cans. Students can experience the powerful expressions of Warhol’s infamous Electric Chairs reflecting capital punishment in America until Nov. 2. Finally, as the Warhol trip nears end, come face to face with big red clown noses and sad eyes in Warhol’s special exhibition including more than 40 abstract clown paintings through October. Frey explained that the free admission to the Warhol Museum is offered through a partnership with the University of Pittsburgh. “Both the university and the museum want to do what they can to encourage students to experience what cultural contributions Pittsburgh offers,” explained Frey. “Our hope is that through exposure in their youth, they develop a life-long appreciation and support for the arts.” Jennifer Livingstone, a senior at Pitt, immediately jumped at the chance to experience Pittsburgh’s culture four years ago. “There were some exhibits in the Warhol Museum that I thought were pretty cool and a bit twisted, but it wasn't some place that I would like to go to all the time,” expressed Livingstone. “But I’m glad I at least had the opportunity to experience it.” The Pitt students are surrounded by several cultural attractions and the Warhol Museum is one example. “You never know where your career path may take you,” Livingstone said. “The more you experience, the more prepared you are to take advantage of any opportunity that may present itself in the future.”
