Keren Shefet For the brief period that I spent at the Forbes Residence Hall located right off of Forbes Avenue in Oakland, I felt as if I had never left the comfort of my own bedroom and bathroom. Though it was a small adjustment when I could not take my weekly bath or just indulge in a long shower once in a while, I think that my experience was definitely worth the sacrifice. As a rising senior, I have been touring many colleges trying to choose which one is the best for me and every time my parents and I go to a private or public university, I am appalled by the dorm rooms that they show us. At home, I am used to my own bedroom that is fairly spacious with a bathroom mostly to myself; no lines, no sharing.. I proved that to myself when I had to leave Forbes Residence Hall to go home and felt very different, missing my room and fellow wing mates. Let me take you through the typical Forbes resident life. As you approach Forbes Residence Hall, crossing Forbes Avenue should never be a problem because of the numerous crosswalks that do function properly (on most occasions) and even local drug, food and clothing stores line this main road in Oakland. When entering the building, you have the option of using the internet which to many, just defines the entire positive experience. Then trying to enter the building, you feel secure when the security woman is willing to get out of her chair to personally check every single ID card of each student. Finally, reaching the elevators, that do not always work properly, you successfully make it to your room with your key in hand. You walk in with a blast of cool air because the air conditioners do work and are usually on full volume but some students do have the option of a balcony. Each room has both a computer and telephone hook up so that you can access the outside world while in the comfort of your own dorm room. But sometimes you just don’t want to leave your room because despite the assumed disruption and annoyances caused by your roommates, you have enough room for some privacy and needed rest. I think that the most important part of the Forbes Residence Hall is that a majority of the rooms have a small powder room that is shared between two connecting rooms (suites) so late night trips throughout the hall is never an issue. This alone makes the Forbes Residence Hall a pleasant experience. Overall, I give the Forbes Residence Hall a 4 +, out of 5 for ratings because it is spacious, comfortable, convenient and homely!
