“Free Furniture For Foreigners Funded Faithfully Following Father God Graciously!”

Editors Note: What you are about to read is a news analysis for the furniture give away that took place last month.

On a bright Saturday morning of Aug 16, 2008 students from across the world had gathered in excitement for the free furniture and household items they could get through Pittsburgh Regional International Student Ministries (P.R.I.S.M) located at Bellefield Presbyterian Church in the heart of the University of Pittsburgh campus on Thackeray Ave.



Couple of students from India arrived at 4:45 a.m. in the hopes of getting the best furniture. While students were gathered outside counting down the clock to strike 9:00 a.m., staff volunteers from Bellefield Church, Memorial Park Church, Allegheny Alliance Church, Pittsburgh Chinese Church-Oakland, Oakland International Fellowship, etc gathered near the entrance for a pep talk by Scott Boyd , the director of (P.R.I.S.M) before they opened the doors after a word of prayer.

Once the doors were opened a lottery system was instituted to allow 25 persons at a time to go after free furniture and household items of whatever their eye could desire! There was a time limit of 10 minutes for a ’furnish your apartment spree’ inside the sanctuary and outside the sanctuary.


This was the place the love of Christ was shown through actions towards international students who had arrived in Pittsburgh from places as far away as India and China. They could experience the love of Christ through brothers and sisters who donated everything so they need not pay a penny to get whatever furniture they wanted for their rooms whether it was a bed, a desk, a table, a sofa, etc. Some students decided to go for the big stuff while others ran into the sanctuary to get as many items as possible within the time limit.

As the two-minute mark approached, lights flickered in the sanctuary to remind the students that it would be time to exit through the back as they are assisted with their possessions. At the exit door they were greeted by two volunteers who offered them P.R.I.S.M’S calendar of events for the semester and asked if anyone wanted a free Bible to take with them.



A Chinese student received a Bible with excitement and started reading through it with questions already in mind. He was assisted by Boyd, PCC-Oakland’s pastor Hugo Cheng, and the volunteers at the exit door.



Once the first 25 group of students exited, their possessions were carried to trucks including to a U-HAUL by the volunteers who sacrificed their time to show the love of Christ to each and every student there. The truck drivers then personally took the students and their possessions to their respective apartments and returned back to continue serving other students following the example of Christ who said, ‘The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and give His life as a ransom for many!’.



All the volunteers sacrificed their time even though it is nothing in comparison to what Jesus Christ did when he went to the cross, shed His precious cleansing blood on the cross to redeem humanity so humanity could be saved from the deadly virus known as sin. Only Christ who had no sin became sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of God when we turn to Him and accept the donation of His blood He was giving humanity.

At one point in time, all the volunteers accepted Christ’s donation of blood to redeem them and cleanse them from the deadly virus known as sin. So, their donations of material things to the international students was an act of love to introduce to them all one day the One who donated sacrificially His own life so that each student there could experience Eternal Life too when they turn to Jesus Christ. God is praised because of God’s care for humanity.



The shopping spree for free furniture and household items went on with a time limit until 11:00 a.m. After 11:00 a.m., everyone near the door was given access to come and take whatever was left in the sanctuary.



Around 12:00 p.m., some of the things left were taken by volunteers and the majority of the items were shipped outside the church to be taken to Goodwill Industries. Overall more than 300 international students were served by followers of Christ who showed their allegiance to Christ by their words and deeds.

P.R.I.S.M does not end its outreach after the furniture give away but has outreach and social events throughout the year to reach international students with the love of Christ.
